What colour to paint rims?

What colour should I paint my ugly rims (rear) and rusty beauty rings(front)? I'm leaning towards the Rustoleum Hammered black (it's what the bumpers are and the lower rub rail will also be the Hammered Black) or should I paint them in the Rustoleum Hammered Copper?

This is what I have so far (need to finish making new gaskets and hook back up the lights, not to mention install the mirrors again). You can see how we are going to paint to rub rails on the sides. We still have to pull the huge ding out of the sidewall under the drivers window. That's why it didn't get painted farther down.

Black would work fine, but might look a little "plain" against the body paint scheme. So I second the vote for copper.

Given the size of the dent behind the bumper, is there anything left of what hit your bus?

Flat-black, something that won't get destroyed by debris, brake dust, and tremendous heat. (I used header paint.)

The bus used to be used to ferry rafters to/from the whitewater rivers in GA, NC & TN (bus belonged to a whitewater rafting outfit in Long Creek SC, not far from one of our former homes). If you had ever seen how those folks drove you would think the poor bus got off easy. There seems to have been a few collisions with immovable objects. I think we will end up backing the bus up a couple of feet, get out one of the ratcheting cargo straps, wrap it around the tree next to the bus and loop it around the bottom rail and start ratcheting. the dent is in a area with nothing behind the side wall (attached that is). The access door is fairly straight once the door is opened up. It has to be racked in order to stay latched shut.

Hey Lorna, when are you going to start a thread for your build? I think this is the first pic I've seen of your bus other than that small grainy pic at the Walmart....

Re: What colour to paint rims?

You can see pics of what I've done at the website under my sig...
http://aluminumasylum.webs.com/
and on more on photobucket (I take pics but haven't taken the time to put word to the pics, so they sit on my photobucket page)
http://s570.photobucket.com/albums/s...%20Conversion/

Looks like we will just do what we have to do to get into it and then move to Roswell and finish it there. The $$ are drying up here. So our goal is to put a tankless water heater in the food cart (Eccotemp L5... buy), a tankless water heater in the bus (Eccotemp L12... buy), put in the galley (build cabinets and buy one refrigerator) and bathroom plus build one closet, strap the tanks under the bus, put a quick connect on the LP line, set up the heat exchanger and the air conditioner (buy). Gotta get going (literally) before we get stuck here.

Re: What colour to paint rims?

Just ordered the L5 tankless heater for the cart this evening. Should be here by July 11th (or sooner). We are going to see how it works on the cart. We are considering this unit for the bus as its $115 (free ship) and the FV-12 is $269 (free ship).

Still haven't decided on the rims. Told David so far the overwhelming vote is for the Hammered Copper. I bet that I will end up painting one side one colour and the other side the other just to see which looks best. Paint, paint, paint...

Re: What colour to paint rims?

More paint and still haven't decided what colour to paint the rims.....
I do like how the refrigerator vent blends into the side

And Here's the shower window installed. Still have topaint this side..

And I got that little "ding" pulled out at the bottom rub rail under the drivers window. Took me a couple of 2X4's and 5 of my bar clamps. Those rub rails are beefy! They had to of hit a tree stump and kept on going. Up side was that once we pulled the compartment door off, it wasn't bent. That door will be moved and used elsewhere. Since nothing is really under there in the area (under the drivers seat) we will paint a sheet of metal and screw it on in case we ever need to remove it to get the the grounding posts.

I need to get the rest of the stuff on the front (lights etc) and get a pic up of it. It's all Turquoise now.

I think the rims could be copper or black. Turquoise or white would be a bit much I think. Your original plan of using copper on the rims still sounds like the best option to me. Or you could use a hammered silver or chrome looking paint. That's what I'm planning to do on mine.

WHITE rims? Eek! No way...that will look horrid after the first trip. Nice flat-black...which also throws off brake heat better.

Re: What colour to paint rims?

I don't need to introduce yet another colour on the bus exterior... the roof is white; the body is Turquoise; the windows are almond; rub rails and front trim are hammered black and hammered copper; mirrors, grab handles, flasher shields are hammered copper. I will most likely end up with copper wheels... or black ones... I have time to decide. Maybe I will have a flash of inspiration (or heat stroke) like I did when I came up with the name of the bus.... Compass Rose. I was rolling the roof coating out in the sun and heat. Inspiration or heat stroke????

Re: What colour to paint rims?

I'm leaning towards the copper. I like the way it looks. I painted the food cart with the copper and it shows the dust after a rain. It's very dusty out here. The bright yellow showed too much dirt. But it wipes clean so much better. Even the bugs clean o much easier. Must be the lacquer paint.

David is rethinking the tankless water heater. The one on the food cart has to be turned on full in order to get water heater to kick on. He often wants a low flow of hot water. I just need to get it painted and the stuff reinstalled. I don't want to make a decision on that right now. Too much heat and paint?

I use to have a 1977 vw van and that had white rims stock. After that i always thought the white contrasting the black of the tires looks super cool and retro soooo my vote is WHITE baby!

Re: What colour to paint rims?

We ran up to Pie Town for the Pie Festival and to get a pie at the Pie-o-neer restaurant (we sell a much better pie and cheaper). Of course we looked at the food vendors and checked out the generators they were running. Most were the EU Honda's (6.5K) and they were very quiet. But we saw a very quiet blue generator. It was roughly the loudness (slightly less) than the Honda's and it was a Chicago Electric from Harbor Freight (in Albuquerque). It was the 2200 Watts one which is of course quite a bit smaller than the Honda's we were hearing. But David and I stood right next to it and spoke with the guy who owned it without raising our voices (he's had it for two years). It is rated as 68 db @ 7 meters. This would work great for the food cart. So we think that the 5500 watt genny which lists the output as 90 db at 1 meter (don't you wish they would use the same distances???) would be suitable for the bus. The Honda 6.5K is 52 - 60 db @ 7 meters ... the 5.5 kw Chicago Electric is $590 (including shipping).

Re: What colour to paint rims?

Working hard on the bus and accomplishing little, so it seems. I've taken a few pics but posted few on the photobucket page. I've been having problems with the computer and ended up doing a clean install. Lost almost all my documents and bookmarks. Anyway we got one of the "important" things installed. The TV!

We removed this from our last remodel we worked (1926 Craftsman Fireplace Mantle). I had checked on eBay to see what similar mantles sold for. I put an $1800 price on mine (lower than the eBay selling prices). An antiques dealer from Atlanta said it was only worth $200 to $300 and he would give me $200. So I told him I would just keep it and cut it down to put in the bus. I thought he was going to pass out. He got up to $1000 before I walked away from him. I told him it had about $200 worth of tiger oak and I would just keep it. So since it is "worthless" I had no problem slicing about 12" off the width and a little more on the height. We had to take apart to cut it down to fit over the front wheel well next to the entry door. A few pieces could not be salvaged so we cut the replacement pieces from the "waste we removed from the mantle. An electric "stove" heater will be placed in the opening and that will be finished up to look like a woodstove set into a brick fireplace.

TV....

This is the "fancy" mount built literally from scrap. The hinges are "loose pin utility hinges" with a thin wire, bent into an "L" in place of the original pins (thin wire is insulation wires that are used to hold batt insulation in place... usually between the floor joists... very handy stuff). I might replace with a nice looking piece of wood but for now, as we are pressed for time, this will suffice. this TV generates a fair amount of heat and holding it off the backing will help the air circulate behind the TV.

The pin removed from the loose pin hinges allows me to attach all the cabling to the TV.

Refrigerator & Freezer tie downs...

One of four eye bolts thru floor to tie the refrigerators down so they don't move. Did the same for the freezer.

We ran ratcheting cargo straps over the top of the refrigerators (we have two stacked on top of each other). there are 2 straps per unit. We strapped down the bottom one first, then we strapped down the top unit. We did the same for the 12 cf Freezer.

This is the freezer vent. The refrigerators have an identical vent. I made a screen to fit inside the cutout and the metal cross pieces keep the screen from falling "in".

Dash heat vents...

We replaced the paper heat ducts with metal duct we bought at an auction. They were about the same diameter. The biggest difference between the paper ones and the metal is that the paper compresses as you replace things like the dash cover and the metal needs some help in the form of a rubber mallet. I ended up beating all the metal ducts in order to get the front hatches to close and the dash replaced.

What's behind the Hurri-hot cover? Several fans and duct hoses. The fans ran quite well. All the hoses were trashed. Mice had gotten in and made nests. I cleaned up everything and tossed the original hoses. We removed all the fans to make sure there were no surprises deep inside.

A heavy rubber shop vac fit in the small hose vent. I cut a short piece of PVC pipe so that I had something to put a short screw into to hold it securely in place.

All the hoses put back in place. Ready for the cover to be put back on and the vents popped back in place.

How I patched the holes in the floor that were left behind by the various bolts and screws. First I used a small hole saw and cut thru the rubber flooring. The pilot bit made the screw holes nice and clean. A dot of clear elastometric roof seal (Henry's brand from Home Depot) was plopped over the hole. A thin piece of metal flashing was cut with a pair of kitchen shears and pressed into the wet elastometric caulk. The clear seems to be less messy than the black. I used both kinds because I had a partial tube of the black. And it was the last tube of the black I bought.

David cutting the air return hole for the hydronic heat system we are building

Cutting thru the floor for the air return. Good view of the cedar lined chest David made as my wedding present.

Another shot of the floor cutting. The wooden chest you see just past David will be set on a raised platform over the hole. This is a return air vent for the heater and will have a filter placed over the opening. The hot air will be ducted to various points thru the bus including the tank bays.

That's it for the pictures for now.

Re: What colour to paint rims?

Got the water heater, plumbing & pump system in yesterday. That float thingy in the fresh tank is working great. The two water filters we use knock the water flow down to a dribble. So the float will allow the filtered water to fill the fresh tank until it registers as "full" and the will shut off the water. No over filling! And the little Shurflo 2088 gives us water pressure like we have never experienced in a campground. Unfortunately, we could not fit the 20 gallon water heater I wanted under the sink. It was 1" too tall even sitting on the floor. Got in the way of my galley sink drains and I wasn't giving up the Kohler cast iron sink. So we ended up with a 10 gallon water heater. This coming weekend, we will install the galley countertop (sink side only) and faux pressed tin backsplash. Then we start on the other side of the galley (which will go much quicker). Also got to get a heat cable/insulation boxes on the plumbing under the bus. We got a low tonight of 19°F and it's barely winter. Best thing.... NO MORE TAKING SHOWERS IN THE COLD BATHHOUSE!!!!!!

I still haven't decided what colour to paint the rims. I've decided that can wait. I'm more interested in getting the galley & water closet area of the bathroom finished up and getting the insulation on the walls/bubble wrap on the windows. I got a pile of culled out furring strips from work for free. David had to pick it up since they couldn't let an employee walk out the door with all that stuff. We didn't get enough to fur out the whole bus, but we got enough to fur out all the sections we are covering with our freebie craigslist pegboard.

It's looking good for keeping this conversion under $5K. My estimates are closing in on $4K right now but I didn't figure in PEX fittings & hardware. Are those PEX fittings brass or GOLD! Still plumbing is done except for the hydronic heater system. We will wait on that until spring. It's getting too cold & windy outside to work. We can work inside since we got lots to do anyway.

I'll post pics when I find (and recharge) my camera. I can't believe how I can lose stuff in this small a space.

I'm thinking of starting a weekly blog where in I post about living full time in a skoolie, in a campground, under construction (the skoolie, not the campground), while working a "normal" job. I thought I could include things like how we live on a tight budget and save on food, etc and include what we eat plus the recipes. I think it sounds boring but I get so many people telling me that we live an exciting life. They also say I have good ideas (that I have shamelessly purloined from others) on saving $$ on energy, etc. Does this sound boring to anyone else?
