Sunken tub/Lowering the floor??

OK, I can't go up unless I also raise the roof of my barn and the railroad underpass just down the road, so....

Has anyone put in a sunken shower base? I figure I can drop it 8" or so and still have room to run plumbing and INSULATE it. Probably find a large one-hole kitchen sink and go from there. Other than proper support and access for repairs, any other things you could see as a problem?

Re: Sunken tub/Lowering the floor??

I am planning the same thing or put in a bubbled skylight

I figured I would cut my hole, make a steel frame out say 3/16 x 3 and weld all the body channels to it, add a few triangles and then use it for my dropped "wall" and build down from there and then across finish the sunken floor

I do not see an issue, be aware of frame location and make sure you have access from top/bottom and sides to weld

I sunk my bath/shower 7" with no problem other than I had to put a lift pump in because the shower drain is lower than the grey water tank. Jack

Good to know. No problem using a sump pump, in fact that makes a lot of things easier.

I thought about a skylight, but I just can't see cutting a hole in a perfectly good roof if I don't have to.

I'm tall so even with the sunken bath I still had to build a pop out on top so I could stand up. Mine is a welded structure that makes it a permanent part of the roof--so no leaks. Jack

That is an option, although my welding is seldom leak proof. Although I should get close enough elastomeric would solve the rest.

Re: Sunken tub/Lowering the floor??

I was just thinking about this the other day. I went to a big RV show in Orlando and noticed a few smaller rigs that had either a sunken shower pan or a raised bubble for your head. The "head bubble" seemed weird... like showering in a space station. If I had to pick between raising a roof though, or lowering a shower pan and adding a pump... I'd go with a pump.

I imagine you could cut out the opening, weld in a steel "cage" to support the pan, then just frame it in with wood and drop in the pan. If that doesn't work, cover the hole with 1/2 plexiglass and you have a floor-light! GENIUS!
