The Washington state scoop...
Just got off the phone with a number of DOL sources...
Once I get the title from the school district, change title, register and get plates, they automatically classify it as a BUS on the title. Only when I make the necessary improvements (i.e. bathroom, sleeping quarters, etc.) AND get an inspection from the Washington State Patrol will I be able to get an "RV" change on the title.
I received this information from three county clerks AND the state office.

Well, after my last post, call me a liar!
Today, I went to title and register the bus at the county clerk's office. Prepared for the worst, I asked her about the bus vs. motor home designation. She called the main state office regarding the bus vs. motor home designation and we both found out that the inspections are a thing of the past... Ten minutes later I walked out of the office with my plates and "motor home" registration!
Total cost, including tax, title fee, plates and other fees? Only $193.45!
So... if you are doing this in Washington, and are being given the "need inspection" line from the clerk, you could encourage her to call the main office and ask them. As always, politeness and a sense of humor are required. ;)

They are wrong. Unfortunately, unless you can convince them they are wrong you're out of luck! When I went in the first time (before I bought my bus) and asked, they didn't know and had to look it up. What they looked up was the procedure for changing the use class from bus to RV. They printed the page out for me and it specifically said an inspection for change of use class was not needed. I took this paper with me when I went back after buying my bus.
Go back and ask them to look up the requirements for changing the use class of a vehicle. If they actually do this rather than rely on their memory of how things used to be, they will be surprised. I may still have my copy of that paper and if so can give you the information off of it.

I went out to my bus and got the paper. I have spent the past hour searching google and washington state websites to find exactly where the hell it is printed from with no luck at all. It appears to be an internal guide of some sort for licensing agencies.
So I spent time looking for the RCW that applies with no luck.
I am willing to make a copy of this paper and mail it to you so you can have it in hand when you go back to the licensing agent. PM me with an address to send it to.

Christ almighty: I'm glad I live in a backward state like Miss. They seem to have a lot of rules and regulations up in Wash. protecting the people from them selfs. A situation such as that would not help my blood pressure. The hardest part for me is to think about is these people work for us. Well yall got it all worked out and thats good. Russell

I had similar troubles here in Virginia too, though all I was trying to do was register the bus for personal use (we still need to have an inspection here). I had to jump through hoops at the DMV as the lady kept telling me I couldn't put car tags on a bus. but I stood my ground (someone else with a schoolie told me what to do and what to say), and after she went back and checked with her supervisor 4 seperate times over 4 seperate issues, she finally gave me the plates and told me "I learned something new today"
Eventually I wil send them the $135 fee and wait 3 weeks for an inspector to come out and reclassify the bus as an RV for me, but I'll wait until these tags are ready to expire...

No you don't need a CDL to drive a RV no matter how long, heavy... it is. However for those of us who have CDLs watching some of those people driving LARGE Rvs without a CDL is very hard to take, cause they don't know what they are doing and can be very dangerous. I would venture to guess most everbody here knows how to drive these magines though. Anyway, you can have a regular drivers license and get you air brake endorsement, it's worth it, believe me. There is nothing like having your air brakes go out while driving, having the endorsement and knowing what to do in every situation is valuable!

well for one thing i have see here in wash it depends on your county that your
trying to do it in and who you are dealing with to. so in you smaller county's
it might by easyer.

Looks like they're doing it by the letter of the law to you. When I titled my bus in '06 as a motorhome it was just go to the county auditor and say it's a motorhome--done deal.
If you got to go by the code--you're f*cked, just my humble opinion.

well in walla walla thats all i had to do to. tell that it had all of the rv stuff and i got the plates and it was a rv and it helped that it was from montana.

this all sounds stressful.lol.Dose this all work the same for an old semi truck thats converted .Im in bellingham WA and i did some asking around ,and everyone tells me i need an inspection.hmmmmmm.
