Making it legal in California
Hey there Skoolies
I am new to this conversion network and I am very interested in converting a bus into an Recreational Vehicle. So, I was wondering if any of you have ANY information on where I can find the title requirements of recreational vehicles in the Motor Vehicle code for California? I have the steps to register it as a recreational vehicle I just seem to have trouble finding the code/section for what actually makes a bus a recreational vehicle.
Any help given, WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
Thank you so much guys!

Re: Making it legal in California
I am in california and I'm trying to do the same thing..
I got all the forms from the dmv yesterday, and plan on taking them to the dmv after Christmas.
I'm just stumped, because, well first off it's sitting on the street illegally, with Oregon publicly owned school bus plates (luckily we live on a dead end road)
And I need to get the VIN verified at the DMV, but they require I bring the vehicle to the DMV. How am I supposed to drive it there?
..I need registration to legally drive it and I can't get registration until I get the VIN number verified and I get it re-titled as an RV (which also requires bringing it to the DMV)
I'm not to worried about driving it because I just drove it like 5 miles to get it smog checked (with the Oregon government plate) the other day and other than the weird looks from multiple cops I didn't get messed with.
I am mostly worried about the people at the DMV

If you know any police officer's they can verify it for you, theres a block at the bottom of the vehicle verification form for them to sign, you can't get the form from the DMV they have to get it from their office & fill it out, I know I had a CHP do mine & just got back with my new CA Plates about an hr ago, bus was titled in Illinois

Re: Making it legal in California
What's the form called?
..cause I'm sure the CHP officer I'm dealing with has never dealt with skoolie registration before
And will he need to verify that it's converted for "human habitation" or would he just be doin the VIN verification?

Re: Making it legal in California
I used California DMV Form 256A. I checked the area that said I was converting the bus to a motor home. I had to indicate the original price of the bus and the costs associated with the conversion. Because it was already registered in California as a school bus, there was no need to verify the VIN. I went into my local DMV office and left 45 minutes later with a motor home registration. No proof of the conversion was requested. I had an easy clerk. Others in California have been hassled.
