Export to UK from East Coast

I am planning to buy a "short" dog nose school bus and export it Ro-Ro to the UK to convert to what I believe (from Walter White) you call an RV! (I have previously done a "minivan" so have some idea of the conversion process and tax, registration and insurance is straightforward in the UK.

Reading this forum it would seem that the biggest problem I face is insurance, temporary plates, license, removing School lights etc. getting a bus to a freight forwarder at an East Coast Port. My plan is to firstly find a suitable port/freight forwarder first and then look for a bus in the same state from a dealer (so I can get it delivered to the Port)

My question is whether anyone on this forum has ever exported from USA to UK. Any gothas I should know about! I am looking at any of the following ports (Portland, Boston, Brunswick) since I have friends in Mass and Maine who could check it was not a dud before handing over the cash.

Re: Export to UK from East Coast

At the risk of answering my own question it would appear that the only US East Coast port service Ro-Ro service is from New York to Southampton via Autoshippers (Skoolie too big to fit in a container!) and Boston, Portland etc. only handle containers. So looks like I will be looking for a Bus in New York state!

I wouldn't buy a bus from NY state unless it has been inspected for rust. They salt the roads in winter. The bus I bought from NY had major rust.

I agree with Cal.

I looked at some relatively new buses from New Jersey. The price seemed too good to be true. It was... They were rusted to the point that I would have been afraid to drive them home.

You may want to consider taking the time to find a bus from areas that don't have the rust problem and driving it to NY. . The Western states turn out some good buses. If you are thinking of buying from a dealer, I have heard good things from members here about:

Wolf Creek in Oregon
Harlow in Montana and S. Dakota
AAA in Arizona.

There have been at least two that I remember that boght here and shipped. Both posted for a while. Unless you plan on driving it in US you shouldn't have to worry about license, insurance and lettering. Those would be things to deal with in your country.
One of the people had a screen name of Tim something I believe.
