Re: Free or Cheap Overnight Places to Stay

I'm fond of All Stays.com Partially because I can also use it to look up a restaurant (I like to eat) or store for needed shopping.

Lots of folks don't know that many Tractor Supply Stores, Lowes & Home Depots allow overnight parking as well. ALWAYS ask the manager's permission not a greater, security or cashier! Some towns do not allow overnight parking ANYWHERE. Buy ear plugs and lock everything down if you want to park in parking lots. Keep a cellphone turned on so that you can call 911 asap in case of a disturbance. Sam's Clubs consistently have security that patrols the parking lot at night. I feel safer in a Sam's Club parking lot plus we have parked in Sam's Clubs when ONP was not allowed in the Wal-Mart next door. I think it has something to do with the membership thing.

Many of the websites listed above depend on users keeping them up to date. If you use a site to stay overnight, then please try to add or update a listing.

Re: Free or Cheap Overnight Places to Stay

If you use a GPS and/or mapping program (like Streets & Trips) you can get POI files from places like the POI Factory. Or you can download the Mega POI file for "truckers, RVers, and other travelers". The low clearance pushpins are helpful. But a word of warning, not all low clearances are listed. I know of one on hwy 282 outside of Ramhurst GA (railroad trestle) that should be listed... It's not and this has a lot of trucks that run it. There is also a very low railroad trestle in Cleveland TN (near the Bradley County Courthouse) and that one isn't listed either.

Handy but not perfect.

Re: Free or Cheap Overnight Places to Stay

How about on the street of a buisness or warehouse area? In Boulder County Colorado you can park on any public street as long as it is moved every 72 hours...even if it is only moved 2 feet.

We have found "dead roads" where the roads were built before the businesses....then none were built. As long as no one complains in our area you can park as long as you want. Many RV's are parking in my neighborhood with full timers all the time.

I had that happen to me a couple of years ago with a young couple in a minivan parking right in front of my home, the police said to call back in 2 days and then they would move for a few hours and the 72 hours would start over...so after they refuse to leave I went out and used my leaf blower at 7am standing right beside their minivan. It only took two morning for them to leave after that.

We are planning to full time on some of these "dead roads" away from any homes and keep quiet and see if we can avoid a RV park.
