I think it could be done if you had a steam electric hybrid, but I think the engine would have to be too big if you wanted it to move the bus just with steam. It would take a lot of battery power to move a bus but at least there is plenty of space for them!

Howabout wood pellets? You could scale up something like the automatic feeder corkscrew that's in a pellet stove.

Speaking of old tech, what about a flame-licker or sterling engine to turn a generator linking that to an electric motor.... since we are talking in oddities here
