I've got a 1995 prison bus to RV conversion with a DT466 engine. Right now the bus won't start, it turns over but never starts. Looking around under the hood and I was able to find 2 hoses that are dripping diesel after cranking the engine.

Now's where me being a complete newbie with engine maintenance comes into play. I've never replaced a fuel line, and am not entirely sure where to start. The 2 hoses are about 6 inch rubber sections with yellow plastic ends, connected to metal lines on either side. I'm attaching pictures of the hoses.

Could anyone help point me in the right direction? I tried unscrewing the yellow plastic part a little but it seemed to just turn in place. Did I not unscrew enough, or is there some other trick for disconnecting it? Is there a specific name for this section of fuel line? What part would I look for to get a replacement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First you need to see if the fuel shutoff is off or on. That year I will assume it would be electrical instead of a manual pull, so it looks. That would be the thing on the injector pump with the lever and holes. The rubber boot one should be accelerator cable. When you turn the key on, does that lever move backwards?

When you crank it, any smoke from the tail pipe?

gildore, those yellow plastic things are crimps that hold the rubber to the metal. Follow the lines to the end and you should find fittings that unscrew. The leak can allow air into the fuel system and prevent it from starting, so I would start there and see what happens.

The "quick fix" would be to cut those rubber hoses in half, and use whatever tools are necessary to remove the old hose and yellow ends from the metal tubes. Then put new sections of hose in place and clamp with hose clamps. If the problem is air coming in from those rubber hoses, then that fix would get you back on the road and likely would last for quite a while, if not indefinitely. You will of course have to re-prime the fuel system once you open it up, or it will take a whole lot of cranking to get it started again. Be sure to buy good quality, diesel-rated tubing. Also, not all hose clamps are created equal - get the kind that is designed for fuel hose if you can, as they are designed to stay round as they clamp down. You might also have to cut the metal tubing if there is some kind of irregularity where it was previously crimped that would prevent the new tubing from sliding on properly.

Diesel Dan, you're awesome! That is exactly the kind of direction I needed. Getting the old hoses off was a pain in the ass, but they're off, new hoses are on, fuel system re-primed, and the bus RUNS! After sitting unable to start for the past month, I'm real glad to have a drivable bus again.
