Who owns a Gillig or Crown with a pancake engine.

I am curious what the different options were for powerplants for the midship engines. I know about the Cummins but what else was used?

Wish my 69 was a 6-71 pancake, but it's a Cat 3208 V8 in the rear, with the upside down shift pattern

Large diesel engines...

Most all large diesel engines can be changed for another maker. Many school bus owners change to an engine they know/like. All engines are not created equal. A Cat 3208 is considered an auto engine that does not have replaceable liners. A conventional Cat, Cummins, Detroit upright engine be installed in most vehicles. All Allison auto trans can be connected to about any engine. The single biggest difference in the engines is weight, and horse power. I am a big fan of the International 466T. I want/need one for my Blue Bird/Int bus. Hint...Hint.. My 7.3l runs great with 2 new heads, but just a bit under powered for my wants. Any "pancake" engine can be converted back to an upright engine with the correct oil pan and oil pump. Frank

Mine has the Detroit 6-71 in it, but Cummins 220's were often also used at the time my bus was manufactured. I like them both...right now 314,000 miles on the DD and she runs fine...everything hinges on good maintenance over the life of the engine

WOW!! That is some crazy looking engine. It looks like it should be powering a space ship or a power plant for electricity.

What is that thing?

What are you talking about? Chrome makes you go faster! Learned that in High School.

Rich
You see Chrome, being highly polished, allows air to slip past it far easier than other metals. This being the case Chrome makes ANY vehicle faster AND more fuel efficient. Haven't you ever wondered why everything in the 50's dripped chrome? In the 50's they put Chrome on all bumpers, around all lights and windows, heck even a couple lines down the side of the vehicle just for good measure. You never know where Chrome may help, that's why every home decor item in 50's was chromed, that little strip at the table was just right to keep elbows from sticking on a hot day. Motto in the 50's was "Of course it needs more Chrome!" And why not? I bet if we were to Chrome a bus it would get 50 MPG at 100 MPH, and as an added bonus it would blind everyone for miles! Of course this is just my opinion, some wind tunnel testing MAY be needed to confirm.... Just sayin'.....
and a Skoolie being yellow under all the chrome would be doubleeeeee fast

Re: Who owns a Gillig or Crown with a pancake engine.

It's been a while since I posted the question. A buddy said his engine is toast. I haven't spoken with him for a while. I was wondering what the different engine came in a mid engine Gillig.

Actually that's not correct. Most of the trim on '50's cars is NOT chrome, it's polished stainless steel. That trim down the sides, around the windows, headlights, etc... that people call "chrome" is not.

I have been told repeatedly to use only Delo 100 in my DD671. Its what I have been using. But here is the Factory Crown Maintenance tag.

It gives info for both Detroit Diesel and Cummins

The "what oil is best for my DD 2-stroke?" topic has been beat to death in various forums over the last several years. If you search about you will find a ton of discussion.

I have put a bunch of miles on DD equipped equipment and spent hours searching for the definitive answer. What I learned from folks much smarter than I: Stick with Delo 100 30 wt. Not Delo 400. Not Delo 100 10-30.

The big concern is ash content. There have been some other oils that met DD spec but as far as I can find, they are no longer available.

I checked with the local Chevron distributor and they have to special order the Delo 100 - 30wt.

Description:
DELO 100 30 [3]

Product Number:
222403

Edit: I looked back at some of the info and one of the "other" oils that I could not find on the shelf was the Delvac 1230. I checked again and it appears to be readily available now. Might be worth researching?

Yes, Delo 100, and no, you need straight 40W unless you're on the North Slope in winter, or maybe straight 50W (if you can even find it) for extremely hot temperatures. Actually any CF-2 rated straight 40W is good. I use Conoco/Phillips 76 T5X, but Shell T1 and a few others are also OK. Just don't use non-CF2 oils (such as Delo 400), or any oil more than 1% sulphated ash, and definitely no multi-weight. I know that the CF-2 rating is now obsolete, but it's still what 2-strokes need. Tejas Bus has some good info on this subject, plus there are innumerable 'discussions' on the BCM and BNO forums.

Thank you John,

The Tejas Bus site is the one I was racking my puny little brain for and could not remember. Good info.

As to what weight Delo for temperate weather goes, my understanding is that 30 wt is the proper choice. I have never encountered 2 stroke DD's running 40 wt.

Steve, I've never encountered anyone here using less than 40W. I can dig out my Detroit book on the subject, but 30W is definitely for VERY cold weather. Everyone I know of with 2-strokes here uses 40W, including the boats. I've never even seen straight 30W CF-2 oil anywhere. If I could find any 50W I would add it to my engine to make a 45W - it would slightly help compression on an older engine.

Yup. Delo 100 40W. That's what I run with 480k on the clock.

My Detroit Lube And Fuel booklet says that straight 30 weight is for temperatures from 0F to -25F, in other words brass monkey weather. Straight 50 weight is for sustained ambient temps over 100F and coolant out temps of 200F. So, straight 40 it is!
