Mods, can we make this a sticky?

All, we have probably all wished for more speed and better fuel economy, especially those of us living with a AT545.

I hope we can compile information we have all found in this location on various tranny swaps. I will be swapping my 545 out as soon as I can find a replacement. Looking at an md3050 however I've recently found that an Allison 2000 maybe be a better swap.

If my Allison ever fails, I would want to swap to a manual tranny. So any information on that would be most welcome.

As for auto swaps--the most straightforward path IMO is buying the entire engine/tranny combo. I think you are money ahead vs. piecing together all the sensors and such to get a computerized tranny working on a two-wire engine.

Depends, from my research so far, most of them use a self contained controller that only needs a throttle position sensor so the tranny knows what the engine is doing.

+10000000000 on the manual swap. Don't think that's possible on a flat nose FE bus? LOVE to swap in a G56 out of a newer ram. Had one in my 07 3/4 4x4 cummins ram and that tranny was a beast!

It should be. You will need a cable operated shifter like from a cab-over truck, but that isn't too hard. I haven't checked vertical clearance yet, you may need a bump in the floor for some trannies. That would be another limit to your floorplan but could be worked around with a side aisle or center table limo bus style.

That is pretty much off the table for me because I want my wife to be able to drive. I know she will only drive it on the highways when there is no traffic or construction, but that is at least a breather for me.

I am still looking for a non-545 bus to avoid this problem from the start. But if a deal too good to pass up comes along, I will cross that bridge.

What ever happened to two-speed rear ends?

Not sure, they seemed to primarily be used for super low then average road gears. I'd like to have a 9 speed road ranger but I'm not sure if they will bolt to a cummins. Gonna have to do some more research!

There are lots of flywheel/clutch/bell housing options to tie them together. Again, it is the shifter and height issues that are new ground.

My old 51 IHC came with a 2 sp when it was new. 8.33 & 6.66. It now has a single gear 6.16. All the truck 2 sp I've seen are geared like this. I've never seen one with an automatic.
