1997 AmTran International DT466
My new blank canvas. I will be picking it up in a few weeks. I get the pleasure of visiting Tennessee and driving back to CA. Details of the bus are as follows,
1997 AmTran Genesis
DT466, last year of mechanical injection pump. woohoo!
AT545 transmission. Bummer
13.2k front axle
19k rear axle
211k miles
wheelchair lift
I spoke at length with the bus mechanic and it doesn't sound like this shop cuts corners with maintenance. The longer buses had MT643 transmissions but I didn't want a long bus. If I can find a good used 643 in the future, I will upgrade the trans.

Re: 1997 AmTran International DT466
I really wanted the shorter bus. Having it come with the 545 is just part of the deal. I hope I can get at least 8 mpg out of it on the way back. That 5 speed/2 speed combo in Washington would have been great but the price was way too high. I look forward to seeing a little bit of Tennessee.

Remember to cover the red lights and "school" word so you don't get hasseled over it. Sounds like a great trip--have fun!

Nice bus... Congrats...
I wish mine would of had the lift at the rear like yours, I would have kept it if it did...
Looks like it's 4-5 feet longer than mine, otherwise it's pretty close... I wouldn't mind having the 466 either...
Good luck on the trip and keep us updated...

Got that covered. I bought an E350 school bus in NY earlier this year. I showed up with a roll of duct tape. I covered the stop sign, red lights, school signs before I left the dealer. I sold it a few weeks ago since it wasn't going to work the way I had planned.
When traveling through different states, I try to make it obvious that my intention is to remove any signs of a school bus other than the yellow paint.

I thought I read yours was a 466. I'm glad I found one with a lift. My BB has one emergency door that is so narrow, I think I would get stuck in it. I'm just bummed about a 545 trans. I was looking online and saw that the MD3060 has a double overdrive. If I could get one of those to work behind the 466, that would be awesome. Hitting the road and going broke buying fuel at the same time is no fun.

Re: 1997 AmTran International DT466
Who lives near Nashville? I need a ride to my bus and can't find any public transportation. I am more than willing to pay for the ride. Google says it's about 75 miles. If anyone has any transportation ideas, let me know. Thanks.

Will the folks you're getting it from not come and get you?
If you parachuted in...that would be cool

ouch 5 1/2 hr one way, how about calling "limo type" service and just ask them what it would cost? or taxi service? I am sure you have thought of this tho' where are you going being that it is 75 miles away from nashville that makes a big differenece in plans

Nice bus! That is great news. Have you thought about driving a eco car over to Tennessee, pick up bus, go to hitch installer, install hitch, tow eco car back to cal?

I'm not really sure what an eco car is but my trip is going to be 2400 miles. I'm not willing to double that. That would kill me.
