The bus with no name...

EGAD!

After several years of applying to the forum, magically, my address was accepted. I have no idea why, but I'm glad to finally have been accepted. All those years of Skoolie forum rejection really put the screws on my shrink.

Anyway, I will have some images soon. In the meantime an introduction:

To the best of my current knowledge, she's a 1999 Thomas Saf-T-Liner hailing from North Carolina school districts carrying a cat 3126 and an md3060. As of right now, my wife and I cannot decide on a a name, so until that time comes, I will refer to her as the bus with no name. (incoming song parody).

I Look forward to sharing my trials and tribulations with everyone here. I have been silently watching for so long I feel like a stalker. But now, my wife and I can share our bus with everyone, and hopefully extract some knowledge from the experience to be found here.

Welcome!
Picking a name is fine-but don't lose any sleep over it. Because what I've learned is:
Even if your bus has a name, it won't come when you call it.
And unless you have more than one-you will still be refering to it as "the bus." As in : I was working on THE BUS. or "I can't find my glasses" "Did you check THE BUS?"

Re: The bus with no name...

Welcome to the joys of skoolie conversion. It can quickly become a passion. I was crazy and bought a second Crown bus (the new one is a three axle 40'). So my 1988 Crown with the two axles is no longer called "The Bus", but is now called Lucy, and the big tandem Crown is called Ricky. We thought the names were appropriate. The smaller Crown (Lucy) with the more delicate Detroit 6-71 turbo, and the big hulking tandem Crown (Ricky) with the massive Cummins 855 turbo.

We look forward to pictures, pictures, pictures.

Ha. Thanks for the welcoming.

Apparently, the camera on my phone takes pictures just barely over 2mb. Forcing me to resize them to post. haha. Anyone know of a good batching software for downsizing loads of pictures at once?

I will be adding them as I have time. As of right now though. I'm working full time, trying to start up a business, working on this bus, and trying to find time for everything else, like sleep. oh how I miss sleep.

Re: The bus with no name...

A perfect storm happened this weekend, and it manifested into some knowledge.

I managed to make a little bit more progress to the bus this weekend, and I found out that I may be having some family over post holidays. I also have not been sleeping as well as I would like to lately. All of this created the need for a new sleeping surface.

It really started some 10 or so years ago. I happened across a situation where I could trade a bit of work for a lightly used Select comfort Queen. I took advantage of the opportunity. I had slept in it one night previously and had one of the best nights of sleep ever. Fast forward to present day and that mattress took a beating and died.
So we did what anyone does, we went to the store, picked up a memory foam bed, because everyone liked those, right? Well. It was okay. I didn't really like it much. Still have it today. Haven't slept well in years.
This is where the post family holiday visit comes in. My wife and I both started with next to nothing almost five years ago. So, we don't have an extra bed. Not really much space for one. But now we closed off two whole rooms of our house for non-use. It won't be that hard to turn one into a guest room... if we had a bed to put in there...
I think it's pretty obvious where this is going... We bought a new bed. It's not here yet, I will be updating when it arrives and when I get some time to sleep on it.

This bed is a little different. I first saw it here: . and the site: https://www.tuftandneedle.com/

So I started looking into it. A bed that would leave extra headroom in my non-roof raised skoolie, at an affordable price, with great reviews... hmmm...
Anyway, from the company's mission statement to the final product it all seems to be very good and very upfront. I just hope it's as comfortable as everyone says it is.

I figured I would share this here because it's worth looking into. We all have to sleep on something, here's to hoping it can be both high quality and affordable. The bad news is, I have to build a king size bed frame for it. This also loses me some bed side storage that was planed for the bus. One thing I really liked about it, is that they say it's built to sit on the floor, no box springs necessary. Excellent for a bus bed. Lightweight, double points. The list goes on, check it out and let me know what you guys think. I'll post a follow up with our results.

Re: The bus with no name...

Sounds interesting, let us know how it sleeps (that's all that really matters to me). And I absolutely agree on the new age memory foam crap. My ex-wife insisted on getting one years ago that cost over two-grand and it was the most god-awful thing to try and sleep on ever. I let her have it in the divorce. I got better sleep in Navy bunks that had a two inch cotton mattress on top of metal.

Re: The bus with no name...

We put a Sleep Comfort in our Crown bus. We have one of those king size adjustable Sleep Comforts for the bedroom at home and both my wife and I believe it is the best bed we have ever had. We generally sleep like babies. It is priced way out of line compared to most other beds. However, you whole life can be negatively impacted by chronic bad sleep. We got our Sleep Comfort queen size for the bus with a major special from Camping World. We got it for almost $1,000 less than what Sleep Comfort would sell to us directly. It is also designed for an RV, with rounded bottom corners.

Bottom line for me is that all the work on a bus conversion is meaningless and a waste of time if you dread going to sleep in it. You have to have a comfortable bed in your bus. I consider it mission critical. Your website link was very helpful. It looks great. I checked on some reviews online and found good comments. You are so right about how cheap it is compared to a Sleep Comfort. I hope that this is a reasonably priced high quality and comfortable bed for you and your family. I will certainly be checking this out for my next conversion project.

Great find!!!

Thanks, I had actually used that before... a long time ago. I had forgotten about it entirely.

Gettin ready to head out for work. Just dropping another picture.

PS: The aforementioned bed is great. I'll include more on that when I get some time. SO much work to do, so little time for the fun stuff.
