We may be completely crazy...

We haven't quite finished our bedroom in the bus and we have already decided to "remodel" it!

We will be turning our bed 1/4 turn and placing it up against the driver's side wall.

Cutting a few inches off the bed frame to allow for 14" at the foot of the bed (so I can squeeze around the foot of the bed to "my" side of the bed.

Pulling two windows and swapping them (a regular window into an emergency window space) then skinning over the emergency window frames after removing the glass.

Pulling the existing wall covering and replacing it with full height planks.

We decided it would be easier to climb over the cedar chest (placing it in front of the rear emergency door) than climbing over the headboard of the bed. Better now than later!

Couldn't stand looking at David's empty chair. It would start me up crying. So I replaced both of the chairs with a mini daybed and rearranged things a little. It hangs over the wheelwell about 11-12 inches so I added a few decorative/structural brackets under it as well.

Got the shelving in what I thought would be my "linen" closet. Turns out, after stuffing the Club packs of toilet paper (30 rolls) and paper towels (12 fat rolls) in, I have just enough room above the vacuum cleaner (Bucket Head on a 5 gallon bucket) to slide a soda can crate in. Oh well, I got a 4 ft wire shelf that runs the length of the closet (that will not get cedar lined today) that I can put the extra bath sheets on. Looks like it's going to start raining out there and the temps are starting to drop. Time to clean up the mess. Nice that I got a place to put the paper stuff. I've only been grocery shopping once a month lately. So the bulk packs are a time/money saver. Also means I won't need to store paper towels in the galley. More room to store food!

I bought a 4 pack of little solar step lights this week from work. I glued neodymium magnets on the little mounting bracket. Now I can mount the bracket any place outside on the steel body and have a little light. Currently, I put one at the top of the door and one a little lower down so I can see the step better and the key hole of the door lock. I also put one on the front of the bus near the door so I can see where the timer on the extension cord is in the early morning. I put a space heater in the jeep and the night before I go to work, plug the heater into the timer so I end up with a warm vehicle to go to work in (and a thawed out windshield). I "store" the timer on the extension cord in the foothold opening of the bumper. Keeps it out of the weather. I will remove the lights before I travel and put them back out where needed. No wires. No holes.

knob on medicine cabinet



The mirror I used for the medicine cabinet was originally designed to hang on the wall from a decorative rosette on a chain and ribbon. I mounted the mirror to the medicine cabinet door using spring mirror clips. Then I used the rosette as a knob to open the cabinet door.

Also made a shallow pan using vinyl pan liner to go under the washing machine. Seems a premade plastic pan was too wide. I only have 29" in width and all the pans I looked at were 30". So I glued up a shower pan liner and glued it to the floor (PL375 is approved for shower pan liners) and up the sidewalls a couple of inches. Not that it can hold much. But I wash in cold water and the incoming water is so cold that the tub sweats a lot. I thought I had a leak at first. Then I took the front panel off and the whole tub was dripping from the water line down. I'll wait to put a drain on it until I have an extra person to help from the inside.

The liner I bought was more than enough. I guess I will use it up when I make the black and grey tanks this summer. I'm doing vinyl liner on insulated plywood box. Easier than fiberglass and should hold up for a long time.

Finished painting the vanity. Still need to do more work on it, trim, finish up the medicine cabinet, buy/wire up lights (one on each side of the mirror), lay the little bit of floor tile (requires pulling the toilet) and order/hang a new accordian door (in espresso colour). Plus trim out the window. And that will be complete.

Is that the "faux" wood look I have seen done with rubber and sponges?

It's all latex paint. Originally painted with a Martha Stewart metallic (silver... I forget the name) over grey Kilz2 primer so that is my base coat. Next coat is Behr Marquee Semi-Gloss in Caicos Turquoise (yes, it really does cover in one coat). I used a rocker graining tool to make the wood grain effect. Next coat is Ralph Laurent Glaze in Brilliant White and used the rocker wood graining tool on it. The Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren were OOPS! paints so I got them cheap. I mixed the Marquee myself. I need to buy some clear water based poly to seal it. Probably satin.

I really like the Caicos Turquoise. It's such a pretty colour. Goes well with the Behr Hawaiian Pineapple yellow.

I'm going to paint the galley cabinet doors the same way. Then I will put the new clear Rustoleum Magnetic paint on the doors. I'm also thinking of putting the new Rustoleum clear Dry Erase paint on at least one of the doors as well. There are benefits in working the paint dept. The new clear stuff isn't in our store yet. It was in the dept "Hot Sheet" for this week. Supposed to come in in March or April.

A used (2005) GE Super Large Capacity top loading washing machine. The washer AND the Maytag dryer (1995?) cost a whopping $250 from a local used appliance dealer. Added an LP conversion kit to the NG dryer for $11.72 (Amazon). I love having an onboard washer and dryer so I can wash clothes on my schedual. Like today. It was rainy and windy. I didn't have to schlep my clothes to the park's laundry. I even toss a load in late at night to wash while I watch TV or a movie. I can wash the full size quilts in the washer. I can even wash the sleeping bag (all by it's lonely). I cannot wash the two king sized quilts. So I cut one down into smaller mini quilts (2 personal sized throws) & cushion cases for the daybed. I need to cut the other one down and hem the edges. Just not today.

Plate Storage... Love those binning strips!



Finally got the plate storage figured out. It was so simple I really don't know why I didn't think of it sooner. Maybe that's why? I just put a stepped board about 6" from the front of the cabinet. The inner step is the same height as the support frame at the back of the cabinet. Then I glued a length of binning strip to the front and back above the stepped board and rear frame. This way the dividers are supported by the stepped board and rear frame while being separated with the binning strips. I used cut down paint stir sticks (again) as the dividers. I have some of that non-slip shelving cushion on the bottom of the shelf.



Close up of the binning strip in the back of the cabinet. I think I need to paint the dividers at some point. The interior of the cabinets are painted with interior semigloss latex paint (Behr Ultra Pure White 3750). This particular cabinet is 18" deep and 22" wide.
