Adhesive Remover for left over glue under reflective stuff.

I've tried nearly everything to get the goop off from under the reflective stickers. The letter is easy with a heat gun but this stuff is tough. Even with the heat gun the reflective glue stays on the body.

I went to get some 3M adhesive remover and it was $20 for a small can. The active ingredient is Xylene. I picked up a can of Xylene for half the cost and it works like a charm. I used a foam brush, made my way around the bus just getting it wet. After it soaks a little while you can take it right off with a fingernail, scraper or a cordless with a wire wheel. The wire wheel worked real well and boogered it up in a jiffy.

The key is to keep it wet and let the chemical do the work. Be patient and it'll work.

Good luck.

Re: Adhesive Remover for left over glue under reflective stu

i was reading up and just thought i would throw my 2 cents in, what i found worked great and was reall cheap and easy was to use "goo gone" spray, i got it at dollar general for like $1.50, spray the letters and decals wait about 10 minutes then a metal putty knife to remove them. once they are gone, i spray the residue again (very liberally!), wait about 10 minutes, or the time it takes to spray everything and walk back to the beginning. what i did was take a small harbour frieght orbital sander (about $10) without the sand paper, so it is just the "soft" velcro bottom, and stick a dry "sos" pad to it. it soaks up the cleaner. DONT push hard, just rest it against the residue and it does all the scrubbing for you. it only took me about 45 minutes for me to do the whole thing. afterward it barely even left any swirl marks or scratches. (i assume no responsibility when you try this, just trying to help) it wouldnt have mattered to me anyway seeing as i have to repaint the whole thing to get registered here in wisconsin. if nothing else its a very cheap easy thing to try before spending alot of time or money. hope this helps someone.

Re: Adhesive Remover for left over glue under reflective stu

I bought a high pressure hot water pressure washer years ago that cost several thousand dollars just to remove the huge decals from rental equipment that was bought for resale. Rips decals right off... Then laquer thinner and stainless steel pad takes care of rest. Other methods are razor blades... takes lots of time, and some hot product like laquer thinner to dissolve the glue. Another way if you are going to paint is simply to get out the ten inch grinder with the 36 grit and grind the whole thing off, and touch up with the laquer thinner. It will have to be primered and sanded after that, but does a fast job as well.

Just throwing in my 2 cents..... we used a product called "Aircraft remover". You can find it at auto parts stores. This stuff is paint stripper on steroids. It just walked the reflective tape and decals right off the bus. After that I hit it with the palm sander and called it done.

If you go the route of paint stripper make sure you follow the safety guidelines. This stuff is caustic as all get out.
