Asking for advice! Want to bid on bus today!

Hi!

Wondering if anyone has any advice on a bus that I want to bid on today.

Year: 1999
Make: Blue Bird
Model: TCFE8400
Mileage: 182099
VIN: 1BAANCSA2XF084045
Running Condition: Runs and Drives
Engine: ISB Cummins 5.9 24 Valve
Transmission: ALLISON MD-3060
Body Style: BU
Tires: Fair
Brakes: Fair

Link to auction: https://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/au...ew?auc=2357409

We plan to convert and travel for 2-3 years. Is this one possible a good fit?

Also, I saw another thread that lead me to this bus and making me double think myself... I am terrified of bidding on a lemon. Plus I won't be able to view it before purchasing so also terrified in that essence.

ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!

That is a good looking bus.

The 5.9 may be a little light on power in a full size bus. Having the MD-3060 is a definite plus.

It's yellow, and you're terrified of bidding on a lemon...

Sorry, I know that doesn't help.. I couldn't help myself.

Crap shoot either way. Buying anything ex-government is always a gamble. Usually you get a good egg, but I had a bad step with an unscrupulous agency on that very site a few years ago. Vehicle listing said 'Runs good, was turned in for newer vehicle". Not the site's fault, mind you, but 'additional info' alluding to 'upper engine noise' was in the Q&A, and this did not show up until I logged in.

Of course, I didn't see this info until after I placed my bid, and then it was too late. Wound up paying $1180 for an ex-police car that cost me $1800 more to replace the engine because it had a knock that made more noise than a diesel. Got 4 years out of the car with relatively little trouble before some idiot totaled it, but had I known the engine was shot, I wouldn't have bid. Lots more zeros when you take a bad step on a big, heavy vehicle like this.

Two things to consider... The Cummins is generally a good engine, but I've heard things about injector pump issues with the 24V version... AFAIK, those here who have them have been happy with them.

The other thing, the other buses having Caterpillar power could be a good thing, maybe not. I've seen quite a few 3126-powered trucks and buses with cooling system problems. Would help to know which engine.

Caveat emptor.

Sorry I can't be more help, but personally, I would want to inspect up-front. Utah and Nebraska both are known for harsh winters and a lot of road salt. Rust never sleeps.

HenrysCat is on to a seller that seems to be on the up-and-up. Perhaps you might contact them.

It’s huge! Do you need that much bus? Bigger is better, right?

Consider where you’ll be taking it. Wide open places like boondocking BLM land in the Southwest, no problem. Highway 1 pacific coast, no problem, except for pulling into those tiny beachside parking lots.

Utah bus looks like their activity setup. Dual tanks, under storage boxes. Looks like a decent unit. Bids will skyrocket in last 5 minutes. Set a limit and stick to it.

Steve - My husband and I just laughed out loud! Auction closes in 40 minutes and it's noonish here so no alcohol - but I sure do feel like I could use a drink right about now! Wish us luck! We'll save the drink for a celebratory one

I say that in fun but it comes from experience....

A neighbor stopped by on evening fairly buzzed..... I showed him the buses that I was looking at on GovDeals.

The next day he stopped by again asking questions about a winning bid email that he received. He bought a bus... He had no recollection of bidding.

Depends on how you look at it. How good is the deal if you got a good price on something that you don't really want or need?

Fortunately, he got a good enough deal that he was able to flip it and break even.
