I vote leaving enough room to sit up also.

The carrier I was on had bunks 3 high, don't remember how tall each bunk was, seems like about two feet not any more than that. Hated by everyone. Top was preferred, had extra head room, but had to climb a ladder. Next was middle, worst was the lower you had to get on hands and knees to get in. Your locker was in back of bunk, door swung out and up, so you couldn't open locker if you were in your bunk. Well, I could if I got clear out to the edge, but I was really skinny back then.

also a vote for sitting up,AND!!! if you decide to do over bed storage, leave enough room for when you sit up you dont hit your forehead on the storage

I thought I had enough...nope so I took about 8 more inches off both of them

plus sitting up to watch tv before bed is good and helps keep popcorn out of the sheets

This is a silly question. How can you ask us how much room you need? Are you claustrophobic? Do you read at night? It's like me asking how many eggs should I eat this morning? How long should I walk my dog?

If you don't want to waste space with your bed, how about a hammock? or a murphy bed?
What I am really hearing is you want to make a sleeper couch to put away during the day.

It frees up space for junk and storage and uses the walkways when you won't need them because you are sleeping.

My shorty only has room for a combo seating & sleeping. A small sofa that slides out into a bed, then tucks away during the day.
