Bus engine parts

Where is a good place to get specific engine parts for your bus? For example I am looking for a new cap for my reservoir tank and have not had any luck.

But there are other parts I would also like to get, but not sure if there is a good reliable source I should tap into for getting them. Any suggestions?

Look for heavy duty truck parts stores. Fleetpride is a big one that comes to mind. Napa also has a decent supply network. Otherwise you could probably get away with using an expanding rubber plug:

If you can figure out exactly what you have under the hood you can get engine specific parts all over. Getting the model # off the engine would be the first step.

be careful if thats a pressurized reservoire like a lot of the International DT engines are.. the cap needs to be a specific pressure..

also if it was a vented cap then a plug like that will impede the ability of that reservoire to release and retrieve coolant from expansion..

truckpro is another place to try as is Rush truck centers.. Rush is in masny cities the ionternational dealer.. that cap may be specific to the Truck as opposed to specific to the engine...

ive bought parts for mine from schoolbus pasrts company and also from finditparts.com

Oh yes, of course! I was thinking small vehicle coolant reservoirs with the cap on the rad. :S I'm glad you caught that. My bus (being an International) has a pressure cap on the reservoir. I'm not sure what the Cummins 5.9 set up typically has going on.. Either way the bung idea is a bad one since you want some way for air to enter and exit. Dumb caps still need a pin hole.

I didn't do more than a quick perusal of the site, but it looked legit enough to bookmark.
Besides, it was a link to an outfit Christopher'd mentioned earlier.

I've been looking at this site for a while, and I'm getting ready to contact them. I have a leaking coolant expansion tank right above my engine. It's cracked near the top ot the tank. Someone put a patch on it. It looks like it may have held for a while. It does hold some pressure now, but not enough.

I am unaware of any wrecking yards or anywhere I can get used bus parts around here. Anything like that in Oregon is probably located much closer to the freeway, over in the central valley where most of the vehicles in this state are.

I do intend to try patching the tank, and if anyone has ever tried anything like that, even unsuccessfully, I would love to hear from them. It would be good to know what didn't work for someone else.

But I also want to see what a new one is worth. It's just a piece of plastic. It shouldn't be too expensive, hehehe.

So I intend to contact these guys soon. They've been in business for a while. They started in 1956, which, coincidentally, was the first year I rode on a schoolbus. It was a 1940 Ford and stayed in service until around 1960.

I just got an email from the CEO of BusParts.com. He said he couldn't help me with the expansion tank and advised me to contact a BlueBird dealer.

I also asked him about the mysterious threaded hole in my bellhousing that I have mentioned in other threads, and he advised me to contact a Cummins dealer about that.

So BusParts.com does exist. They do answer queries from people asking for things they do not stock. Which is good, because one of these days I intend to try to service my own transmission, change the filters and such, and these guys stock filter kits for my transmission.
