Co2 sealed battery box

Hey,

We are planning on having our batteries inside the bus and want to vent to outside. How well insulated does the box containg the batteries need to be against co2? Someone was saying you need to insulate it with rubber, plywood then a layer of metal around it and caulk all sides so there’s no air leak. Is that overkill? What would you suggest?

Thanks!

Your batteries will off-gas hydrogen when charging and vent sulfuric acid fumes which loves to attack electronic equipment.

I built my battery box out of plywood then sealed the inside with fiberglass resin to keep the acid fumes from eating the plywood. The top is sealed to the box with some closed cell weatherproofing foam and 4 studs with wing nuts. Hydrogen is lighter than air so vents should go out the top of the box and out through the bus body.

My vent is made out of a sink trap piece epoxied to the top so I can unscrew the trap nut and disconnect the vent. The part that goes through the bus wall is a battery vent from dyersonline.com.

If you clean and wash the box every service when ya top off your batteries you shouldn't have hydrochloric gas issues
