EXHAUST BRAKE
I HAVE A 5 INCH EXHAUST PIPE AND I BOUGHT A 5INCH EXHAUST BRAKE USED OFF EBAY AND I WANT TO KNOW IF I HOOK IT UP WITH A MANUAL SWITCH DO I HAVE TO HAVE A CONTROL FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO LOCK UP THE CONVERTER OR CAN I JUST RUN IT WITHOUT. CAN ANYONE HELP.

Well we drive buses out here with 4 stage retarders. They are not exhaust retarders though. They're look like huge alternators that wrap around the driveshaft. Not really sure how they work. Telma is the make. Let me know how your exhaust retarder works out. I do a lot of mountain bus driving.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but an exhaust brake will be about as effective as sticking your hand out the window on a bus with an AT545. Exhaust brakes rely on the torque converter clutch to keep the transmission from just over-running the engine. On top of that, you really would want to have the bus manually downshifted so as to bypass any overrunning sprags in the transmission itself to get the FULL benefit of the exhaust brake.

I drive for a school district where we're in the high mountains. All out buses have Telma retarders. They are electromagnetic and work great. Most of them are 4 stages with a lever to activate it near the steering wheel. In the snow it's like having a hand brake on the bus, good for freestyle bus driving. No one tell my boss! Oh yeah and the kids aren't on the bus when I'm screwin around either. Have to be careful with them though when it's icy out cause that rear will slide.

Think of the energy that could be harnessed from those. Sorta like a hybrid car. Could be a cool way to charge a battery bank.

we have one of those telma aux braking systems in some old ambulance.
ours is also four stage. i don't really know how it works, but i always assumed it had a regular disk brake on the driveshaft, but used an electromagnetic actuated caliper on it......
now i'm really curious
how does that thing work?

They work like a shorted alternator to the best of my knowledge. Basically they make electricity which they turn into heat. Locomotives use a similar concept. I'm with Phill on that one. Diesel-electric hybrids actually make sense for buses, especially school buses and city transit buses.

Has anyone hooked up an alternator of sorts to the driveshaft to generate power for a battery bank? Sounds like a feasable concept.

I'm sure you could, but hooking it to the engine seems a whole lot easier and will have the same effect.

How many amps is a typical alternator in a bus? Is there a maximum size you can put in?
