Gauge to weld guidance?

I'm at the stage where I need to weld the floor to move forward. What gauge steel should I use? I will need to do a large piece for the section, see the picture attached. It's the area your feet rest while driving 20180410_113828.jpeg

16ga seems like a good fit.

That's what I was thinking but this is the first welding I've done so wanted confirmation/opinions.

16 would do, 14 would be perfect.
At least in my bus the floors are 14ga from the factory.
