is it something that has to do with certain states? im 7 months in now with progressive commercial and just fine.. or is it because my busses are still pretty much busses? or because progressive is based in Ohio and the insurance laws are different?

Progressive in the letter is suggesting I go with their commercial insurance like you did.
My cancellation was based on trying to insure it as an "other" motorhome.

Doubt that this was the reason: far more likely was the "Motorhome" nature (regardless of make) along with the "Bus" on the VIN.

I was quoted an AIS commercial policy for $442 a year for liability for a bus (told her EXACTLY what was going on: "I'm driving it off the District lot and want to gut it and make a moving van/RV out of it"). You know, as in 'still a bus on the title'. The next guy who called this lady was turned away because he was trying to insure a "Motorhome Conversion" - she wanted finished photos. I do not know if she would have covered him for the bus as such. But you might check with her. Nice person.

progressive lady did ask me on the phone.. "are these busses still busses?" she didnt say anything about motorhomes or ask me if I was converting them.. just asked if still a bus.. which in my case they are... both have no plumbing, permanent kitchens, etc and still have more seats than not.. one is all seats and going to stay that way.. though I may take one or two out or reconfigure the seats to better fit my needs.. they never asked for pictures... if they ever do I'll just drive it to their cleveland office and say "yep its a bus!"..

As I have said before, I had my agent insure mine as " commercial for non-commercial personal use". This simply says that you have a commercial vehicle for a toy and you have the proper licenses to drive said vehicle. My own bus is a Bluebird CS. This is a commercial passenger bus. I have a had a class A license for about 15 years. I have had no problems so far. I did learn the lesson that once insured DO NOT let it lapse or cancel it. When I bought it, I insured it to drive it home. Then I canceled it for about a year. BIG mistake! They gave me the run around until I found the commercial for non-commercial personal use clause. Hope this will help. It is thru Progressive that I get mine also. They seem to be the ONLY company to insure us.

This is exactly what was on the cancellation notice, no more, no less:

"The 1998 INTER 3800 is unacceptable because it is a converted school bus.
You may be eligible for coverage in Progressive's Commercial Auto Program."

Sure, commercial vehicles get insurance every day.
And you pay a higher rate accordingly.

True. But, my is about $670 per year for liability paid in full.

No doubt. But the outfit I mentioned seemed to have surprisingly low rates for commercial policies which WOULD cover a school bus to RV conversion-in-progress - I was very clear with her exactly what I was insuring.

I posted the info because a lot of folks seem to feel they have NO options, and I wanted to provide at least the inexpensive commercial policy option in case that might beat no policy at all.

BTW - Progressive won't do "commercial for private use' in Virginia for some reason. AIS will insure in the 48 states:

When I first tried National General Insurance was the only one in the country who would and they would only do liability. If you go bother the DMV about it I believe they have specific requirements about having a stove and toilet etc. When National General asked if I was doing modifications myself or if they were being professionally done and I answered honestly even they turned me down. It's best to say as little as possible. RV Insurance would be cheaper but saying it's just a bus that accommodates under 12 people is easier. Anyway, I had better luck going in person where my girlfriend has her homeowners insurance as well as several vehicles. When he searched for E-450 it didn't come up with his computer so he said ".. Have fun with your new van." And listed it as an RV. So in my experience saying you have a vehicle that is a camper that you just take on trips a couple times a year they are more likely to list as a recreational vehicle.
