you should at least get the transmission pressure tested, since the owner said it slips on the first upshift...the longer it goes, the worse it will get. and you need to know the transmission type as the prices vary for rebuilt ones, and if ya cant change it yourself it is likely to cost you at least $3000 to get a rebuilt one put in.

As far as the transmission goes, it's probably an AT545. I have been told that they run $1800-2000 with exchange. That does not include r&r. That 3k is pretty close. The bus sounds cool.

i live fairly close to a wrecking yard that scraps busses, and i think the good used 545's and even 643's go for around 5-600 bucks for the ones with like only 50k miles on them.. they tried to sell me some 643's for 400 that were good cause they had a whole stack of them.
so you might check wrecking yards who bid on busses.. mostly they are interested in selling the engine and scrapping the rest as trannies and axles and tires are not fast sellers.
