Painting Windows
I'm planning on painting the insides of my windows and tinting some of the others. I've read about the window tints, but I have yet to find out what kind of paint, you're using to black out windows.
So, I have two questions: 1. What kind of paint is everyone using?
2. How is everyone preparing the surface?

roasting8, i painted the back windows in my crown bus with rustollium black. cleaned them first with windex. needless to say it started to peal off after about a year. so , you could rough up the glass i suppose or maybe some kind of acid to wipe on them to rough them up and it would probably work ok. what you might do is when you do your tinting, get some of that tint that is almost black. i got some on the side windows on my pt criuser and you can not see through it. good luck

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for responding. It's been a while since I posted, I've been working a lot of overtime (12 hrs a day, 5 -7 days a week) for the last year and haven't had a chance to do anything else. Heck, I had to carry over vacation from last year.
Now, getting back to the bus. I might try that film, that you're talking about, because once I cover the windows, I'm planning to panel over them.
I really thought that the paint would do the trick, but it looks like I'll just have to go for the tint.
BTW, where did you get that dark of a tint?
Thanks again,
Roasting

Hi Richard, did you do anything special to prepare the windows?
I was previously looking at your conversion notes and the only thing I think you mentioned was that you painted the windows (I may be wrong, looked at a lot of web sites before asking the question).
Thanks,
Robert

Use sign vinyl on the outside of the window s it is super simple and tint ont he inside . Try tintdude.com for any window tinting questions you might have . remember black limo attracts heat use bronze reflective for heat rejection //// limo is great but sometimes heat rejection on a hot day is king . Go for teh custom look by asking your local sign company for scraps and multi color the glass . For sign vinyl rolls goto your local sign shop and explain what you are doing most rolls 24 in by 10 yards go for $45 dollars or so .

Hey guys,
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond, I'm actively looking for another job, so I can cut down on the hours.
Thanks for the suggestion on the sign vinyl, but I really want to keep the bus look on the outside (as I yell from the roof tops; "I'M A SKOOLIE OWNER AND I'M PROUD OF IT").
I was originally thinking of putting up aluminum, to cover the windows, but I really like the looks the bus has now.
I will check out tintdude.com and see what they got.
Thanks guys for the help.

I used 5% window tint (thats about as dark as it gets) it looks great from the outside. You have to walk up and cup your hands on the windows to look it. Nightime is a different story, if you have lights on you can still see in. For me that's where some sort of window treatment's will come in.
I did discover something weird, when I lower a window that creates two layers of window tinting they get almost solid black. So I wonder if you only wanted to create a few windows solid black could you double up the tinting on those windows ????
Anyhow here are couple pictures of my results here in Michigan.

Thanks Rail Hauler, I was thinking of going double tint, but painted the windows instead.
The windows I'm painting are windows that will be covered with paneling.
Here's a picture I took of the windows:

Here's a picture of the windows from outside the bus:

For the rest of the windows, I'm planning to use 5% limo black. I'm ordering it tonight.
Sorry for the quality of the pictures, only had my camera phone with me. I'll try to take better pics next time.

I'm in Davison just southeast of Flint. Were damn near neighbors. This bus is turning out to be a fun project. We camped out in it Saturday night to test my new beds (it was 25 degrees out). We grabbed some snacks popped in a movie and everyone fell asleep before the movie was over. The beds worked great, I'm now onto the construction of a small cabinet to hold a cooler and storage bins.
I understand your heading to Buningman?
I did a little research and that seems to be a very intriguing concept.

Robert, first off, sorry it took so long to respond. I guess I overlooked the thread. Second, i scrubbed with dish soap, dried and sprayed. Nothing special. So far, it is still holding up great. I see that I am too late as you have already done them. Good luck, I'm sure they'll be great.

Now, it's my turn to apologize for responding late.

Re: Painting Windows
I have a 5% tint on my windows. I was thinking instead of painting the windows. I am going to put aluminum foil on the inside then wall over the ones I wont use. The aluminum foil will add some insulation. I have tried to paint windows before, they always peel.

Man, if I had to do it over, I would do mine with the tint and aluminum foil also. I can't complain though, the paint on the window has been holding up quite well.
Trick is to protect it from getting scraped. If it does get scraped, it's just a matter of cleaning the area and repainting.
Thanks for the idea though, I'll try it next time I have to block out a window.

Re: Painting Windows
since I am going to, eventually, cover the windows inside and out, I was thinking about using some of that foil backed bubble wrap insulation to cover the windows instead of painting them. Since windows lose a lot of heat, I thought that might be a good idea.
Just some thoughts

Re: Painting Windows
I have some of that 1/4" foil bubble wrap insulation up on the front 6 windows on each side. It does a pretty fair job considering it's not fastened to the windows. I have noticed on cold days a small (3"-4") patch of condensation on 1 or 2 windows, but attribute that to not having the foil smack up against the window. On the windows I plan on blocking, I plan to paint them black and insulate (properly) with the bubble wrap.
