Spare tire Mounts

Has anyone come up with a good way of mounting a spare tire on their bus? I usualy just strap the one I have to the back platform below the rear door, but I was wondering if someone has figured out a better way of carrying one. (outside the bus) I've experimentd with underbody storage but thought the tire would hang too low, and semi-truck spare tire carriers would have the tire sticking out over 1ft past the side of the bus. Any ideas?

I think building a small rack on the roof and putting it up there is best for me. To get it up there, at least on my bus you can put it on the hood then stand on the hood and put it on the roof, but my bus has a gulwing hood and is all steel so that might not work on all buses. That is also how I get up there for setting the satelite dish.

I've never carried a spare but I suppose it depends on your bus. I have enough room behind the rear axle to store one under the bus suspended from the frame rails. The tail of the bus would still touch down long before the spare would.

Spare tire? What's that?

I do have one, but i don't usually carry it with me. IF a duel goes flat, you can first try to plug it with a do it yourself kit......if that doesn't work, or if they tire is not repairable ie: hole in the sidewall, you candrive a long long time to get to a tire shop. I drove more than 100 miles north of LA with a flat on the rear, and i had a spare and the tools to change it. IT was easier to go to the tire shop and let them do it. $80 bucks for a new(used) tire and i was good to go.

If a front goes flat, you can switch the front for a good rear tire while you drive to the tire shop....

all that being said, skoolie tires do not easily go flat. Even when they are "rock hard baldies" they seem to just go forever.

Yeah even after hitting a geo metro sized pothole at about 60mph they still hold air.

I bought my bus from my old High School & I remember back when I was a Junior in high school someone slashed a bunch of our bus tires & most of our busses got new tires. I'm pritty sure that mine got new tires as well because there in very good shape with lots of tread.

Gimme the PG13 please, that way we can expose more people to SKOOLIES! By the way, have you submitted your "sand-up-to-the-frame" picture to 4x4 Magazine's "Worst Stuck" section? I'm guessin' you could make the anuual "Worst Stuck" Photo Issue!

I was going to mention that myself, actually. The mags love to get pictures of our stupidity because it sells more issues I think you get a t-shirt or $50 or something out of it too. You're a shoe-in, 4wd or not. It wouldn't be the first time they've had a 2wd "Whoops"

Re: Spare tire Mounts

OK, here's a couple thoughts on the subject:
On my Ford pickup, there's a support bar or stamping that is used to hold the spare under the rear gas tank.
Large bolt at one end (fixed in place), with another bolt like a giant eyebolt at the other.
Kinda copy that, but I gotta tell ya, it'll be heavy and pretty awkward....easier than getting it up/down from a roof, tho.

I've also seen a 'winch'-type setup on some Japanese-manufactured pickups.
Basically for them you use the lug wrench as a winch, and crank the tire up or down from where it's hung on a cable.
In the skoolie setup, adapt a winch from a boat trailer; use plastic-coated steel cable and the appropriate fasteners etc. to suspend the wheel assembly. Since a winch can easily hold 500 pounds, a bus wheel shouldn't be a big problem.
Hang the tire under the rear behind the pumpkin if you have the space.
