That's great, I can source them locally for $10-30. That's quite a bit less than any holding tanks I could find.

Aside from taking up inside space or wrapping with insulation, what steps do they take about keeping the contents from freezing in the winter?

Mine will be winterized and stored. But people add heaters and insulation if they full time.

You could use heat tape around the barrel.

Several full-timers here have run heat tape around their exterior tanks then insulated over it to keep the tank from freezing. Their water supply hoses got the same treatment using some foam pipe insulation over the tape.

Why not just drop it through a drilled hole in the top? and skip the over insulating unless you are living in Canada etc.. To each his own.

Yes, I install 2 of them. I still in the building stages on my bus. I used "Uniseal" to connect the plumbing pipes. If you look a the last picture you can barely see them.
