Window A/C with inverter and large alternator

I have a rat rod ambulance which is like a shorty bus but with a lot more insulation and no windows except little ones in the two back doors. On ebay I can get a 3000 watt inverter. A 7000 BTU window a/c unit uses around 3000 start up (compressor kicking on) watts and about 900 watts after the compressor is on. If I get a high output alternator, why can't I go down the road with this. Why do you guys say I need a generator? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't go below 3K genset. Not much diff in $$ when buying used. I would even go so far as getting a 4K genset. Used you are looking at about $100 per 1K power (4K genset is selling for $400 or less on craigs list)... at least around here. Use www.craiglook.com to search your area.
