Windshield Wiper Wiring

Am converting a 1972 Carpenter Coach with a Chevy chassis. Wiring has been a nightmare due to previous owner. I've got most of it figured out except the wiper motor wiring.
Originally there was a double toggle switch, one side to turn on/off, the other side for Hi/Lo. I installed two separate switches. First switch has two terminals, I hooked the red/power wire from the motor to one terminal then a jumper to the 2nd switch which has three terminals, I put it on the mid terminal. I then took the black wire to the 2nd switch for low speed and the green wire to terminal for high speed.
The problem is when I plug in to the main power bar the resister and motor get immediately HOT. Still works but clearly this is not right.

Also, any ideas why reverse lights wouldn't work? All original wiring that has not been tampered with.

Any help is much appreciated.
