Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

No way. But thanks. I couldnt resist the following quote. For those of you most interested in SKOOLIES the following may not be to your liking and I apologize. If on the other hand you have ever wondered--

Rudyard Kipling

Gunga Din
You may talk o' gin and beer
When you're quartered safe out 'ere,
An' you're sent to penny-fights an' Aldershot it;
But when it comes to slaughter
You will do your work on water,
An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it.
Now in Injia's sunny clime,
Where I used to spend my time
A-servin' of 'Er Majesty the Queen,
Of all them blackfaced crew
The finest man I knew
Was our regimental bhisti, Gunga Din.
He was "Din! Din! Din!
You limpin' lump o' brick-dust, Gunga Din!
Hi! Slippy hitherao!
Water, get it! Panee lao! [Bring water swiftly.]
You squidgy-nosed old idol, Gunga Din."

The uniform 'e wore
Was nothin' much before,
An' rather less than 'arf o' that be'ind,
For a piece o' twisty rag
An' a goatskin water-bag
Was all the field-equipment 'e could find.
When the sweatin' troop-train lay
In a sidin' through the day,
Where the 'eat would make your bloomin' eyebrows crawl,
We shouted "Harry By!" [Mr. Atkins's equivalent for "O brother."]
Till our throats were bricky-dry,
Then we wopped 'im 'cause 'e couldn't serve us all.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
You 'eathen, where the mischief 'ave you been?
You put some juldee in it [Be quick.]
Or I'll marrow you this minute [Hit you.]
If you don't fill up my helmet, Gunga Din!"

'E would dot an' carry one
Till the longest day was done;
An' 'e didn't seem to know the use o' fear.
If we charged or broke or cut,
You could bet your bloomin' nut,
'E'd be waitin' fifty paces right flank rear.
With 'is mussick on 'is back, [Water-skin.]
'E would skip with our attack,
An' watch us till the bugles made "Retire",
An' for all 'is dirty 'ide
'E was white, clear white, inside
When 'e went to tend the wounded under fire!
It was "Din! Din! Din!"
With the bullets kickin' dust-spots on the green.
When the cartridges ran out,
You could hear the front-ranks shout,
"Hi! ammunition-mules an' Gunga Din!"

I shan't forgit the night
When I dropped be'ind the fight
With a bullet where my belt-plate should 'a' been.
I was chokin' mad with thirst,
An' the man that spied me first
Was our good old grinnin', gruntin' Gunga Din.
'E lifted up my 'ead,
An' he plugged me where I bled,
An' 'e guv me 'arf-a-pint o' water-green:
It was crawlin' and it stunk,
But of all the drinks I've drunk,
I'm gratefullest to one from Gunga Din.
It was "Din! Din! Din!
'Ere's a beggar with a bullet through 'is spleen;
'E's chawin' up the ground,
An' 'e's kickin' all around:
For Gawd's sake git the water, Gunga Din!"

'E carried me away
To where a dooli lay,
An' a bullet come an' drilled the beggar clean.
'E put me safe inside,
An' just before 'e died,
"I 'ope you liked your drink", sez Gunga Din.
So I'll meet 'im later on
At the place where 'e is gone --
Where it's always double drill and no canteen.
'E'll be squattin' on the coals
Givin' drink to poor damned souls,
An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din!
Yes, Din! Din! Din!
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Though I've belted you and flayed you,
By the livin' Gawd that made you,
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

This has been a great thread to read, and great pics too. I have a few questions though because it all starts out with the project well under way.

I assume you started with a 35 Chevy skoolie and the frame and drivetrain were both shot, so now you are rebuilding those from scratch, or whatever works best? Could I see some photos of the bus body and what your starting point was? What are the plans for the final project? Motorhome, custom street rod style bus, or dare I say restored as a school bus?

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Christopher, glad you have enjoyed the thread. Its the first time I've actually kept track of a project and it is kind of fun to look back. There are a couple of posts under the same heading that were done on 4/9 and 4/14 of this year that tell a bit more about the project. I'll share a little history and a few pics re the bus.

I spent the better part of a year trying to find a short (under 23' so it will fit in my garage) Chevy bus for this project. Twice I thought I'd found the right bus, one in Oregon and the other in Washington state nearly in Canada. The trips to view/buy these were a lot of fun but both busses had been badly overated--as in junk so I got skunked. Eventually an appropriate bus showed up on e-pay. It was a 1936 Ford with a Superior body and a running Chevy 327/400th trans. I bought the bus. It turned out to be better than what the seller had described. The PO had owned the bus for 17 years and used it to promote his antique business in Sandy, Utah. Prior to that it had been a mobile medical clinic on a local Indian reservation and a school bus before that. Its blue grey color came about because the bus was used in a made for TV movie about "Topaz", a Japanese relocation camp near Salt Lake City ,Utah during WWII and operated by the Air Force.

Despite finding a great bus, I still wanted the project to be a Chevy so I found a 1935 Chevy 1.5 ton cab and chassis (from Reno, Nevada) to use along with the Superior bus body. I sold the Ford chassis, front end and driveline ( to be used under a '36 Ford tow truck) and began adapting the bus body/Chevy sheet metal into what is now a 1935 Chevy school bus. It turned out that the '35 Chevy still had mechanical brakes and a 2 spd rear axle combined with its original 6 cyl motor all of which seemed to work fine after a through cleaning tune up despite having not run in 30 years or so.

I had planned all along to convert the bus into a full motor home and it was now clear to me that the original driveline wouldn't be good for the road--so I sold it and purchased a 2005 Chevy W3500 Turbo diesel to replace it with which brings me to the present state of bus build affairs.

I've been collecting MH stuff and it looks like the bus will have a combo bath/shower, fresh/grey/black water tanks, propane powered 3K Yamaha generator, stove& oven, kitchen sink, dinette, on demand water heater, HVAC heat and air, a pneumatic "paralleogram plug" entrance door, a slide out to accommodate a quen bed, and a pop up roof center section to accommodate my 6'1" body. All this in a 13' X8' space? We'll see!

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

I know I'm alittle late to the party, but thanks for posting the rust removal bit, my bus has its share of rusty parts, been watching out for a spa tub ever since.
Is a spa tub necessary for agitation of the soup, or will the electrodes work on their own?

Also, enjoying the repost of the beginning . Did I see that custom barstool in the Morris? That thing sure gets around!

'77 You ain't seen anything yet----that bar stool has seen many tales as yet unshared My hard to make laugh wife is still laughing her a-- off over that!

No, you don't have to stir the pot to make the rust thingy work. The electrons do all the work. As it cooks you can watch the eddies caused by the movement of electrons from the anode to the cathode. My biggest problem with the system is that as the soup thickens it begins to look like the best batch of chili you ever saw. Crazy as it will seem, all that glop will settle to the bottom a few days after the power is turned off.

Wiffie says not chilie but witches brew--what do women know?

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

atc77, While I was standing in the think tank (shower) I realized that I haden't answered your question. The reason I used a spa is becaue\se it was FREE and because it is made of plastic (fiberglass). It is non conductive and therefore does not enter into the electrical process of rust removal. Any old tank will work as long as the anode and cathode don't touch and short out etc. Also, if you watch the hydrogen bubbles as they come off your rusty part you can get a pretty good idea how well your electrodes are set up. The electron flow (and therefore the cleaning action) works best when there is a straight line between the donor metal and the part. Therefore, arranging things to achieve that produces better results. Check the bubbles after about the first 5 min of operation and adjust as necessary. Once the chili starts brewing you no longer can see the pattern. Hope that helps.

Oh yea, If you stick your arm in the water between the anode and cathode you will get a little TINGLE. I discovered this while retrieving a sanding block I had accidently dropped in the tub

Hey Trunt --- you certainly don't seem to hesitate at taking on major engineering projects (LOVE the Morris BTW). Makes me wonder what you did for a living in your previous life. Beautiful work my friend and many thanks for sharing your experience with us builder wannabes. Just wish you were my neighbor!

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Thanks for clarifying about the tub. Can't wait to try this process out, wish I had known of this a month ago as I just disposed of several bath tubs from a remodel / tile job I did. Oh well, that's always the way of it for me, I used to keep stuff like that around for some sort of future use but was starting to be in danger of starring on "hording, buried alive". Now the rule is this; If something comes in, then something of equal or greater size has to go, the size of crap pile stays the same( or shrinks). i.e. - I sold 3 jensen healeys, 1 datsun 260z, 1 mgb, 1 honda shadow, and one hightop camper van, then replaced it all with a school bus... was too much empty space, nature hates a vacuum.

Thanks for filling me in on the extensive backstory. Its quite a project, but since you seem to have the skills, tools, and most importantly the time to work on it, I know it will turn out great.

'49 and Tango '49, it was just enough to get radio free Europe on my fillings

Tango, I expect that my neighbors also wish that I was your neighbor--not theirs As to the before stuff I never managed to last much more than 10 years at a job. I built houses, taught school, owned a car rental company and finally retired as (do I dare say it) a police officer. The one thing I have always done is to play with cars--go figure

10 years!?...Har...yer way ahead of me there bud. My longest real "job" was about four! But that's what I get for being an...uh..."entrepenuer"? And while I had you figured for a NASA type, you've obviously made the most of your varied background. And thank you for your service. Anyone (military or civilian) that puts their butt on the line for the rest of us deserves our thanks and respect.

And lastly...lemme know if either of your neighbors decides to sell and move out. Maybe we could start up an OBRU...(Old Bus Recovery Unit) right there in your neighborhood. Surely they would appreciate that.

I know I shouldn't go there, but I have day dreams of buying the house next to me and tearing it down all except for the side that faces the street. I'd build a LARGE shop behind the facad and -----ZZZZZZZZ etc.

You are not a good influence on me, Ha!
