Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Allen, good obs. I've considered something like that but my trolley top is going to have to "pop up" (due to the height of my garage and the fact that the city won't allow parking a SKOOLIE on a drive overnight). If I can figure a way to use something like that it would look cool! Thanks for the tip. Jack

Out-Frikken-Standing! (as we used to say in the Navy). Congrats on the run. I can't wait until I can pull off the same feat! And again...I'm pretty certain we have the same intercooler. Is yours a Behr? I can't make out the mode/serial number on mine but I'm really glad to see that one that looks the same just might fit.

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
It is an amazing feeling when you turn the key for the first time and it fires up without hesitation. I remember the first engine I rebuilt (WAY back when) and the rush I felt when it started on the second pull. I still get that same rush nowadays.
I'm a wood guy myself so what you and Tango are doing to your rigs is miraculous!

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Roach711, What we have here is a mutual admiration society. I finished up a woodie wagon not long ago and I swear it is the one and only one I'll do---I HATE WOOD. I'm even planning on doing the interior of the bus out of steel to avoid the woodwork I admire you guys who can measure twice and cut once and have it all fit. I guess I don't have the patience for it. The wood stuff is beautiful when it is finished but it sure is easier just to melt things together.
I'll bet Tango can do woodwork though!

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
I'm still waiting on those special Oak rods for my welder.
I can get by, but I'm no woodcrafter. Like Trunt, I admire those that are. Worked with a chap who was an old school boat/ship builder. Man...I still cannot believe all the tricks that guy could do with a simple square to shape & fit boards that were anything but. Not a straight line anywhere but they went together better than my simple table-sawn right angles. Just wish he was still around to help on this project. I could sure use someone who can work with curves.

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
GREAT NEWS on the joy ride !
As for the wood vs metal, there's sawdust in my blood, so wood is definitely my deal; although, I must admit melting metal together with a tiny spot of the sun makes me giggle like a schoolgirl.... Its cool

I see your dash "mounts" are still holding up to the sun

They may not be UV safe so it would really suck in 2 months to have the gage cluster fall and break

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Hey Trunt --- unless you want/need the trolly top to come down flush, you could set it up with a fixed inner raised rim about six inches (or whatever) high, then overlap that around the outside with a matching rim that could be raised giving you an extra foot or so when jacked up. Saw a very early Ford built travel coach set up that way. As I recall, the inner portion even had windows all around. Biggest difference being the Ford overlapped about three feet. Had screw jacks in the corners that raised & lowered it and a weather seal that kept nature out. Picture a vertical slide-out.

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Jack,
I saw your post earlier this afternoon. I have a partial thought on it and tried to draw it out.
[/img]
I used these leakproof hinges on a couple of teardrop trailers I built. I tried to draw a cross section of one, but afraid my drawing looks like a psychadelic bullseye instead of a hinge. These hinges are sometimes used on coaches for water tight storage doors as well as for the galley hinge on teardrops, also used on some of the 14" x 14" trailer roof vents.
The roof can be raised using a setup similar to those on collapsible trundle beds.
I can't quite nail down anything for the short front or rear panels, but I'm sure there's an easy solution.
BTW- these hinges can be tough to run down, but they are available.
Hope maybe this will help out some

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
To all---I wish I did have a second security camera just to watch me! I took a bunch of pics during the day and at the last minute set the camera down SOMEWHERE safe ( I was about to lay it on the back bumper of my S dime but had the presence of mind to recognise that I'd drive off and loose it) so I put it somewhere ELSE while I helped unload a tow truck. I havent seen the d--- thing since. I wish I could chalk it up to old age but I've been doing that sort of thing for as long as I can remember ( which, by the way is back to 2 yrs old so don't go there! HA).
As usual the missing item will surface just after I spring for a replacement-- two pair of sun glasses, two 3/8 drive rachets, two diving snorkels, two garage door openers, you get the idea and now soon to be two cameras. That's right, go ahead, yuck it up--I deserve it!
Tango, I've seen those pics as well, and that's what I'd like, but I do need to get the entire popup to come down flush with the roof as I have no spare room clearing the garage door (can't park RV outside in OX -nard). While I will have the trolley up when I'm camped, it will need to be down while I travel and since this will restrict head room I want stuff to fold out of the way as much as posible --in case I need to head to the head while in transit. I've four really neat 12 volt linear actuators just waiting to be used for the pop up once I figure a way to apply them (vertical, horizontal via scissors???). any more ideas.
I can't find my quart bottle of Rust Mort #@!#$%&^*&%$#!@!^&*(*((*&^@#

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Thanks Allen, while I was bitching and moaning you were comming up with a clever idea! As soon as I'm in a better mood I'll study what you have proposed--what you show is what I am trying to do. Thanks, Jack

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus
Might be easier to just jack up the garage. Or...got a chainsaw? Can't wait to see how this gets resolved. Having seen your work, something tells me it gonna be trick.
