Finishing up the design on the roof.

You painted yourself into a corner!

I bet you are super happy to be done with that large job. How long did it take and how many gallons of paint?

I wonder what your neighbors are saying about the crazy guy who bought a bus.... Mine all think I'm going to drive them around for booze cruises.

No more Smurf fingers for you !

I Love your colors BUT!! I would seriously reconsider painting blue on the roof..
even the light Tan roof on my DEV bus is **HOT** in the top of summer... the white roof on redbyrd is MUCH cooler... and those that have used BUSKOTE or Flat-white paint have even Cooler roofs..

when im working on my bus..ill go in the garage and grab parts or in the house for a few. more than once ive come outside and several little kids (pre-school age) are in the seats with their seatbelts on..

the moms and i laugh about how in about 2 years those kids will be running AWAY from the bus... oh and the moms seem more excited about me taking everyone around the block for a ride than the kids do...

We'll see how it goes with the blue for now. It is only the last six feet and it is a bedroom that will be used primarily at night when the sun isn't a factor. I've got the foam sprayers coming tomorrow to give a quote on spraying closed cell two part foam, which the guy says will give me r-26. I can always repaint it white easily if need be. I'm not sure now many gallons. I mixed the colors myself (none of which look right in pictures so far but I'm really pleased in person) so I mixed extra for future fixes. Probably 2 quarts black, 1.5 gallons white, 3 quarts light blue, and 2 quarts dark blue. Now if I can just figure out why my turn signals don't work anymore after reinstalling them that would be great!

I considered the color thing but it's only for about the last 6 feet of the bus which will be a bedroom. That portion of the bus will be primarily used at night when the sunshine is it too much of a factor. I've got the spray foam guy coming tomorrow to inspect it for a quote. He says he should be able to get me about R26 on the ceiling. If it still seems like it's too hot I can always repaint it white. I'm not totally sure how much paint I used I mixed the light and dark blue custom from the royal blue, white, and black. I think I probably used about 2 quarts of black, a gallon and a half of white, 3 quarts of light blue, and 2 quarts of dark blue.

Looks great!
I have the same vents and love them.
Are you going to use some sealant or just leave them be? I used Dicor and its really easy to work with.

They are sealed with butyl tape currently ssandwiched between the unit itself and the roof of the bus. I have eternal bond tape that I will probably put on I just haven't gotten to it yet.

I've not tried the tape stuff, but the Dicor worked real well and was super quick and easy.
I used the butyl tape too.

So an update is in order. After the work of getting the authorization letter from Thomas and taking the bus to the local Allison Service place the guy at the head office for Allison rejected the OEM letter from Thomas saying that it was not specific enough in what was being specified or authorized. So now I get to go back to the drawing board and see if Thomas will re-issue a more specific letter.

That absolutely sucks. Everyone hides behind the lawyers.

Maybe if you gave them a diagram of what you are after...

How sad, after all your effort. I really hope a hacker cracks this problems and take this out of their hands.
May be we need a manual override with a switch that activates the proper solenoids for the six gear and let the driver take the responsibility to not do that with full throttle.

Or for that matter is there anybody who might be reading this thread who has my same drivetrain and a CIN number that allows sixth gear?

what if you took the TCM out and said "im building a completely custom Off-road project" and need ths TCM flashed for 6th gear..

have you tried the folks at "custom automatic conversion" in gulf breeze fl? when I talked to them a few months ago, they thought they might be able to unlock 6th on MD-3060 TCM's. I dont know if anyone has tried with them or not.

I definitely would **NOT** install manual switches to try and engage 6th gear... you can easily create a Bind and scatter your transmission all over the freeway doing that. more likely would be that the TCM would see the solenoid circuit either open, or would see a solenoid switch engaged that shouldnt be and would Limp the transmission.. which means you would have Reverse and 2nd or 3rd (depends on the firmware). im working with a local allison dealer to get DOC ceritified.. however the prcing may be so high that it ends up being not worthwhile for me to do it.

just for reference, if you want to try and build a manual electronic device to engage a specific gear.. here are diagrams that show you what you need to engage...

this one isfor an MD-3060 mostl likely similar to your vintage..

and for general reference if you want to try on a NEWER allison 1000 /2000..
you need the 2006+ valve body to obtain 6th gear on a 1000 / 2000. and a TCM that supports 6th gear..

you can see its not just a simple wire to a solenoid to pull in a specific sngle clutch.. you have to release clutches and call for others.. and clutches are called for by utilizing different solenoid patterns...

and i should mention that solenoids are not simple on/ off and timing is extremely important to handle shiftquality correctly..

an allison isnt a somple 4L60E..

So Matt Lazier with Allison said that he would be satisfied with the letter if it indicated whether or not the vehicle needed to be electronically governed to stay at or under 75 miles an hour.
