My friend helped me move some stuff and she said it felt like getting on and off the train. Her mom was one of those Hardy Girls that were nurses on the trains. Something like that. Harvey Girls. I was going to take mine out as well, and am now rethinking.

I left the original pole and panel there, and have no regrets. I just added some wood elements to make it look nice, and I also put a couple electrical switches on there for my outdoor lights. You can find a pic about 3/4 of the way down this page: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4959&start=150.

thanks for the pictures showing the stair handrail Dan. mine was gone when i bought it. Yours looks like i is at a pretty steep angle. my original panel looked like a seat back without a seat so it had to go. mine also didn't have a pole going to the ceiling

Pretty dang fancy there.. I'm still marveling over your window sills and curtain rods.
That is a nice look... The rails, the steps, the windows behind.. *sighs*

Thanks Shadoll,
I'm glad you like it. i agonized over that hand rail, and how i was going to attach the bottom of it for quite some time.

I love the use of the structural seat rail for the base of the hand rail. I'm looking to do something similar, and I think I'll try and tie mine in the same way.
Great build. Thanks.

thanks Hex, i even re used the bolts that held the seats into the rail. i have a bunch of them. I have been trying to re use the seat rail inside the bus to secure things as much as possible. i figure if its strong enough to mount seats, it should be strong enough to secure interior furnishings(counters, railings etc)

I like the unique end pieces, look like they were meant for hand rails (the metal parts). Where would you even look for something like that.

Shadoll, are you referring to this metal piece holding up the railing? if so it was designed for hand rails. i picked 2 of them up at the habitat for humanity re-store .i used different screws of to attach it both to the hand rail itself and to the rest of the Bannister

Re: 87 Wayne Lifeguard international S1700 CXXVI
So, can you lock it from the outside? Or is this designed to provide security only when you are inside the bus? I assume when you are driving you use the new lock mechanism to keep the doors shut, right? Since you no longer have the handle and arm the bus driver normally uses to control the door? I'm a little confused about what you are doing here...

it will provide security when your inside the bus, also i can lock it, leave by the side door and lock that from the outside. the lock mechanism will also be used to keep the doors closed while im driving. My main goal is to remove the control handle and bar so that i can work on the dash board. also the handle and arm will need to be gone for when i add the RV door.

Okay, got it. I'm also looking forward to the day when I get around to dealing with my front door situation. I also want to remove the handle/bar mechanism, but rather than doing an RV door, I will likely reconfigure the stock bus door to be a one-piece, side-opening door like some others have done. The RV door is likely a cleaner solution, but I don't feel like spending the $$ and I kinda like the funky skoolie look of the stock doors. I'll bet you could find a deal on a used RV door at a junk yard though... Hmmmm...

Dan, a junk yard, or craigslist is where i have been looking. i also wanted to convert bus door into a one piece, outward opening door, but it has a large gap on one side that is covered by the rubber seal. i would have to add material to the frame and remove the rubber seal in order to put a dead bolt on anyway. so if i can find an RV door of the right size i will go that route. i also like the integrated screen door in an RV door. i may still convert the bus door. but for now i can work on the dash board at least.

Re: 87 Wayne Lifeguard international S1700 CXXVI
I don't know about your bus, but my BB AA the door hardware and door are well engineered. It would take a sledge hammer, with a few blows to break through the door when I set that bus door handle all the way forward. The lock to latch the door when I exit has some problems though. What I'm trying to say is that some school bus doors are actually pretty damn good.
