A couple of views of my large propane tank. It is under the passenger side of the bus at the rear. There is an access door from the side of the bus. It is 40 gallons.

Re: Best Home Yet

Nice steps for the back door. I'll have to find someone to do some creative welding to make a tow hitch. That will be next spring.

Re: Best Home Yet

Two doors, two big batteries. They start the engine and they used to run all the 12 volt when this bus was an emergency response vehicle. I am assigning them to the engine only, and will hook up solar panels and golf cart batteries for the inside 12 volt systems next spring.

Re: Best Home Yet

It's hard to believe, but this is the last of the photos I have until I do all the electrical (110 and 12 volt). I have a temporary 30 amp box that will work for the winter.

I also need to do the water plumbing, build a shower, tile the kitchen and bathroom floor, and do something nice with the walls in the back of the bus.

I recently lost my job. I am getting by though. I will winter it out and save my pennies for the next infusion of creative bus building, (most likely in the spring).

Re: Best Home Yet

Here are some photos I just took. I learned that I DO NOT have a 3208. It is, in fact, an 1160. Just one question for now. Does the 1160 have the oval pistons as well?

Here is a photo of the fuel filter assembly.

Here are some photos of the various placards. Some are on the driver's side valve cover. One is on the dashboard, and one I transplanted on the wall next to the drivers seat.

This next one is on the dashboard. The Ratio-high is 6.8 It is hard to read in the photo. What is that ratio? The rear end?

That's all for now. In the next series of photos, I will be asking questions about what some components are in the engine section.

Stay tuned for more of Rudy's garage.

Hey Rudy,
The 3208 is the replacement for the 1160, basically the same engine with different injector pump. Neither have oval pistons.

Nice to see a familiar face. I thought that Mark O. had mentioned something about the 3208 oval shaped pistons that needed to get warmed up in order to not leak oil through the cylinder walls. Perhaps I did not quite understand what he meant.

Salut Accordéon!

Tu as fait du vrai beau travail sur ta conversion! Félicitations!

By french-canadian and cajun, I guess that you're originating from New-Brunswick or Nova-Scottia? I'm a frenchie too but not cajun, I'm a Quebec-er

Andreb, Merci. Bien oui, je suis Canadienne. Edmunston, New Brunswick.

Oh, for those who don't read French, Andreb's compliment translates to " You have done very beautiful work on your conversion! Congratulations!"

Re: Best Home Yet

Here are some various items, one of which I am going to guess is the governor. Here are some pictures of that. Am I correct in my guess?

As you can see, I have an oil leak on the passenger side valve cover. I don't know where it is coming from.

Re: Best Home Yet

What is this thing? It has a screw-on pipe fitting. It is in the middle of the engine, situated on what would be considered the intake manifold on a gasoline engine.

(Edit) I later learned that this is the lifter pump which supplies fuel from the fuel tank, through the fuel filter, to the injector pump. I became very intimate with this pump because I had to replace it. Pics of that job coming soon.

Re: Best Home Yet

One last thing? What are these things on the side of the compressor? One looks like it has a screw cap on top of it, and the other thing looks like a breather of some sort. Thanks for your time to answer questions. I am impressed with the knowledge of buses and bus engines on this forum.

Re: Best Home Yet

Here's a report on the heating of the bus. It is now the end of December. The average temperature at night is mid twenties. It has gotten down to 17 degrees. I thought that with as much insulation that I put in to the bus, it would be warmer inside. I am using two oil filled electric heaters. I use the middle setting (900 watts). I also have three propane catalytic heaters.

If it gets down to the teens at night, I will use all three propane heaters. The electric ones are always on. It is expensive to heat this thing. I think that I am losing a lot of heat through the many windows that are in the bus.

I can see now, the importance of having a wood stove. I almost wish that I had kept mine. But, as I had mentioned, there was no room for it.

I think that if I am still here next winter, I will make an effort to seal the windows. Perhaps I will make a removable system of "storm windows" for the outside.

It's not as if I am freezing inside the bus. I can usually get the temperature to be 50 degrees higher that what it is outside if I use all my heaters. It is, however, costing me a bunch for electricity and propane.

Perhaps, I will have to do what my friend Bob does, and go to Arizona for the winter. If I didn't have my recording studio in here, I definitely would have kept my wood stove.

A report on the waste tank. It is under the bus. It got frozen this winter, making it impossible to dump. I, then, became a bear in the woods!!!
Lesson learned: mount your tanks (all of them) inside the bus.
