Re: Best Home Yet
I just got back from picking some Blackberries. I picked hundreds. There is at least two pounds in this batch.
I have already picked thousands. It is slim pickings now. They have almost been all picked. There will be one more picking of hundreds before they are all gone. I am looking forward to the peaches getting bigger. They still are small. Perhaps the trees will have to get bigger before they grow big peaches.
Most of the Blackeberries have gone to people who have made pies, cobblers, juice, and jam.
This batch is going to a friend who will make cobblers.

Those ZTRs are life savers all right, but TEN HOURS???? I used to ride one of those for 5 hours once a week and when I'd get off I'd feel like I was two inches shorter from all the bumps. Ten hours would have crippled me for sure.
Lovin' the new pictures.

Roach, I have never done ten hours in a row. I break it up in several days.
After three hours on that thing, I feel beat up like I have been playing tackle football.

Re: Best Home Yet
I captured a pic of the Blue Heron this morning. This is as close as I could get before it flew off.
It was unusual to see the bird on the foot bridge. Ordinarily, it is in the stream.

Re: Best Home Yet
This post is for nothing more than to celebrate my 1000th post. I was Bus Crazy. I wonder if I will now be a Bus Fruit.
I am going to start carrying my camera with me. I missed some good close up shots of the Heron the other day.
I have some pictures of a clan wild turkeys from a place that I used to be at. If anyone wants to see them, just say the word, and I will post them.
This is the Bus Fruit saying, eat well, be well, smile a lot, say I love you often, be kind to strangers, and hug your kids.

Re: Best Home Yet
I just saw all your beautiful pictures. I was curious where your corner of heaven was. It took me a while to find it using the clues in the photos. I was looking for creeks, but it is hard to follow creeks in that area, because they are under trees, and tree lines could be nothing more than fence lines between fields.
The public photos on the internet are 2 years old, and since they were taken there have been a number of improvements to the property as seen in your photos. But if you know what to look for, you can find the windmill, power poles, and the dead tree by the driveway to confirm the location.

Redbear. I spent some time many years ago in Raquette Lake in upper NY state. I had a friend who worked at Sagamore Lodge.
The past two years, I was in another state. I am now in Tennessee. I am 30 miles east of Nashville. It is totally different, and much more beautiful than where I was.
I presume that you may be a fan of Google Earth.

As Phil Hartman (as Ed McMahon) would say to Dana Carvey (as Johnny Carson):
"You are correct, sir. YES!" Your farm is too close to the city for my tastes, but you probably have ready access to MUSIC if you so desire.
I hope to soon move a couple hours north, and retire somewhere near your old stomping grounds.

Re: Best Home Yet
Redbear, it is not MY farm. I am here by the graces of an old friend. I mow lawns to earn my keep.
The only thing I have is my old bus, two dogs, and some musical instruments. I am fortunate to be able to get together with some friends on the weekends to play music. There are two electric guitar players, I play the bass, and switch with Stanley between drums and bass. There is a keyboard player. He and the two guitarists do the singing. Another friend plays accordion and mandolin. We play 70's rock music, like Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Steely Dan, and much more. It is great fun.
I wish I could get some steady work, but nobody wants to hire a 60 year old guy.

Re: Best Home Yet
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I used "your" as in "having the use of" - as in "your" train station, "your" highway exit, "your" hotel room, etc . . . .
edit: Whoops. When replying, I forgot there IS a train station on the farm.

Re: Best Home Yet
The Flood.
Over seven inches of rain fell in three hours last night.
I gathered all the photos, and arranged them in a comprehensive manner.
You will see, before and after pics.
In one picture you will see the driveway when it has not been raining. On the right hand side of the tree you will see a swing chair. When the flood was passing through, the water was over the top of that swing.
That means that the water was over six feet at the concrete portion of the driveway.
Take notice of the grain trailer which is on the other side of the foot bridge. The tires of that trailer are two feet tall.
Ordinarily, I would have parked on that side of the foot bridge. Had I done that, I would have been under a foot and a half of water.
Also, keep in mind that the bus is fifty feet from the stream. The banks of the stream are normally three to four feet high.
Today, the water has receded. I expect to be able to cross the stream tomorrow.
Here are some before and after pics.
