Re: Best Home Yet

Kieth,

The glue that I used on the back part of the bus came out of a spray can. 3M spray adhesive. It was expensive so I did not put very much on. Because of that, the carpet started letting go after a year. The front part was sprayed using a spray gun similar to a paint gun. There I used glue that came out of a big drum. It is normally used for gluing Formica laminate to wood. I used a lot of glue on the front part.

Spray the glue on the carpet, then spray the glue on the surface that you are gluing to. Let the glue dry for a few minutes to where it feels dry to the touch. Then stick the two together. It is similar to contact cement.

Because I was able to get a LOT of glue on the front area of the bus, it has been holding up very well. I first glued the bendable insulation to the metal ceiling, then I glued the carpet to that.

I used grey trunk mat carpet. It is what people use for the car trunks. It is thin carpet that is short napped. It is strong stuff with a strong backing.

Hope the answers help.

There's LOTS more to come.

Back to the floor.

Now, around the dog bed and up to the front. We also drew a center line in order to lay out the flooring boards. Beyond the front line, we used plywood and carpeted it so it would end up the same height of the finished hardwood floor. You will see all that soon.

Re: Best Home Yet

Now it is time to tell you about all the free materials that I have received.

I have a friend who has a lot of buses. He leases them out. They usually get remodeled after a few years.

He has a building that used to be a factory. It is 10,000 square feet.

He has mountains of parts that were removed during remodels.

So he hears about this bus I am building and comes around to see it. He was very excited about my project. So much so that he told me to come to his building and take what I could use.

It was great. It was like going to a camper furniture store and getting the stuff for free.

Here's what he gave me: all of the curtains, The 6 1/2 foot leather couch bottom and back, the walnut raised panel cabinet doors that I turned into a wall at one end of the couch, a Sealy posturepedic twin mattress that is the most comfortable mattress that I have ever had, the two booth bottoms that have drawers with glides, and much of the plywood I used in the construction.

He also gave me a great deal on the hard wood floor. I got ten boxes from him. This stuff is 3/4 oak that is prefinished. The boards are five inches wide and of various lengths. They are tongue and groove. This stuff normally sells at Home Depot for $80 a box. He sold them to me for $25 a box. I sure got lucky.

Re: Best Home Yet

10 boxes of the flooring was enough to do the floor in the front room and the bedroom, as well as the side walls in the front room.

Here, we are installing the center strip in the front room. We are working towards the rear.

How we installed it was: I laid a thick bead of silicone on the bottom of each board. I ran a stripe down the middle. Then we just simply put them into place.

Re: Best Home Yet

Now we are looking towards the front. We are putting the perpendicular boards on each side of the center strip. On the left you will see two of the ten boxes I bought. And, of course, under those boxes is the base for an amazing closet which I will tell you about soon.
