Mine has a U channel inside the hat channel as well. I was glad I'd had hat channel made to go over the top of the factory stuff when I made this discovery!

I haven't done anything to extend the U channel. My raise is done at the bottom of the wall, rather than in the middle as you have done (and as most do). Hopefully I won't come to regret ignoring the U channel..

I cheer every time I see a roof raise.

Don't just weld the outer seams. Add a few plug welds in the center of the ribs. Plug welds are great on thin metal.
