Bus-ta Rhymes

Just picked up our our bus on Monday made the drive from Denver to Albuquerque doing 65mph the whole way.

The bus is 1995 international 3800, with a dt466 and a Alison 643. it has 181,XXX miles and runs like a champ. My wife and I are excited to convert it for vacationing with our 3 boys.

I'm trying to upload pics so here goes.

Got the seats out with angle grinder and impact driver. Managed to sell a few seats on Craigslist the remains seats will probably be sold as scrap.

Flooring out (rubber on plywood). Found a some bad rust by the wheel wells. I plan to cut out the rust and rivet new sheat metal in. Any other ideas?

I hate removing rivets. I've tried grinding and chiseling with a cold chisel and hammer, both seem to take the same amount of time. Making slow progress on interior panel removal.

We are planning on doing a 20" roof raise so I cut out a section of the hat channel to have it replicated in 36" pieces. I haven't seen any other threads with factory metal supports in the channels. Any suggestions on what to do about inside the hat channel I am having made?

Square tubing or some custom U channel, maybe?

I lapped my new pieces of hat channel on the outside of the original channels, not the inside.

That will cure your issue.

The layers all work out in the end. I overlapped my new skin metal over the rub rail at the bottom of the old windows to force the water to drain over, not under.

Now that I'm done that stage, you can't even tell.

Pics can be found here.

Did all your original hat channels have the U shaped metal inside?

So after researching roof raises and see how simple it looks I contacted my father in law who had been welding for the past forty years and works in commercial construction. He was up for he task and we began working on he roof raise this past weekend.

I had the hat channel and and made for a 20" raise.

We used half inch all thread in 6 spots( front, middle, back) to do the raise. Turns out we really only needed it in the front and back. We used jacks to assist with lifting rather than just adjusting the nuts up the all thread.

Mine has a U channel inside the hat channel as well. I was glad I'd had hat channel made to go over the top of the factory stuff when I made this discovery!

I haven't done anything to extend the U channel. My raise is done at the bottom of the wall, rather than in the middle as you have done (and as most do). Hopefully I won't come to regret ignoring the U channel..

I cheer every time I see a roof raise.

Don't just weld the outer seams. Add a few plug welds in the center of the ribs. Plug welds are great on thin metal.

Good job.
