Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

HI Steve x Very cool Modification thanks for sharing, I need to see your Bi fold rear doors up close and personal.

I am Mentally begining the same project for my Rally car/ hauler. Semi or Tractor doors up front and either rollup or bifold in the rear.

Do you have more photos of the door aspects any where./?

Mike

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

Your bus looks good, I have done one and have my second almost done.. YOu can go to my website parkerchassis.com and look at pics of them. They might give you some ideas. I made a whole new rear door that serves as the ramp. It worked pretty good. Good luck, Dan

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

Dan Your web site is great, I have been there... Look in the news section right?

If I remember Fool bus built by a redneck...... or

When you chopped your frame did you put the top of the frame roughly at the bottom of the bumper, then miter off the bottom portion of the frame.

I am most likely going to do the same as you then skin the door with the bus skin.

Do your boxes go all the way across?

If all goes well, this will be a link to Dan's bus:

http://parkerchassis.com/shop/Foolbus.htm

And you guys realize you need to pay me royalties, right?

On mine, I took only a small wedge out of the frame, because I wanted to have enough frame left for a stout trailer hitch, and also not lose any ground clearance. Come to think of it, I did not even cut an actual wedge out, but simply cut a slot, and then forced the upper part down over the lower like the blades of a pair of scissors. Not building a watch here!

I also notched the crossmembers that are part of the floor so that the surface of the floor is all the way down on the frame at the rear.

Happy New Year!

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

Michael, yes i cut a pie shape ,dropped the frame so the top is approx. the top of the bumper, then cut the frame level.. I built runners side to side out of 2x3 1/8 tubing. I have another one almost done. The frame and door are done that I would sell. It is a 86 flatnose 38ft. detroit eng with hwy gearing. it will run 70. has belly boxes also. Might take a good condition short bus on trade???? Thanks Dan

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

Thanks for the offer, I am commited to finishing this project. I know once I cut into it it will turn out fine but I am being lazy as it is pissing cold here in WI.

right now it is looking like the back wall will be bi-fold. the rear bumber will be hinged. Ramps will slid up into the frame.

Thanks for the input.

Going back to short busses and trailers?

Mike

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

you sure have me interested!
been thinking about doing a chop/tilt combo but slip inside is a great idea, too bad my Mog is so tall, but it may still be doable.
here is a video of what got me going
My Mog is a rag top with a flip down windshield, well less than 6' with the top down but it does weigh 7,000 pounds

am I nuts? SWMBO thinks I am!

Thanks steve, that is just push i needed to reach the sawzall.

I was concerned that the doors would be wiggley and Gappy. Yours looks like they seal up quite good.

Thanks for taking time to post the video.

Re: Car hauler / RV school bus

HI SDI, My first bus hauled a 5600# IH scout around to tractor pulls with 1800# of tractor weights hanging off the front of the bumper.

My first Hauler, had a beaver tailed back end that was open, like your video.

This time around I am building to haul a smaller automobile, (rally car) but I am building the full lenght enclosed version like steve is doing.

My model has a dropped floor like elliot did in millicent combined with bi-fold doors likes steves.

Deep in my mind I have been thinking of a roll back type frame like your video.

Spring has made it north to WI and the sawzall is showing through what is left of the snow. so it is go time.

Thanks again steve for the video.

SDI you are not nuts
