Chessie, the rally car tow rig

May as well start chronicling our build here. We're starting with a 2003 International 3800 11-window Blue Bird body, DT466E (195 hp/520 ft lbs), Allison 2000 tranny, 4:60ish rear end, 255/70x22.5 tires, air bag rear suspension and rear wheelchair lift. We bought it from Moyock, NC (October 201 and it was a Chesapeake City school bus, hence the name of the bus.

We had to get the air bags replaced because they were dry rotted, but other than that everything was fine.

We will use this bus to tow our son's rally car and other race cars as needed. The rear 4 windows will be set up as a workshop, hence the need for the wheelchair lift in the back. The front 7 windows will be our living quarters.

So far we have painted it grey (not our final color scheme), mounted some driving lights, gutted most of the inside, insulated the roof and started the mini-split installation. We hope to get the ceiling and floor done first then start mapping out the interior layout.

And why we need a workshop in the bus:

There are two in Michigan and one in Ohio. You could also check with your local SCCA for their Rallycross schedule if you like to see dirt flying.

I know how much work it is to put on a full rally like that. Hopefully they can make it work this year. Not sure what our full schedule will be, but NEFR for sure and maybe a few of the Canadian ones.
