So i need some advice
I have the opportunity to get a free 400 gallon aluminum vegetable oil holding tank from a restaurant. It is 8''x 3'' with a 3ft diamante. It comes with a grease pump and all! I would love to use it for my future conversion to WVO but am a little nervous on where to place it...on top would make the height of the bus to high and below would ruin my ground clearance....and then there is the weight.....any suggestions?

Sometimes free stuff isn't.
If it compromises your entire design, it's going to cost you a lot more than "free", right ?
Look up the weight/gal of WVO to see how much mass you're talking about. Assuming it's similar to water, at around 8lb/gal, you'd be talking about 3200lbs in this tank. That is more than the official rated payload of all commonly sold pickups in the US.
Frankly, I wouldn't it it anywhere other than right over the rear axle.
A tank that large on your roof would make the bus dangerously top heavy, assuming you could support the weight at all. The driving characteristics of the bus would change dramatically depending on how full the tank was.

All great things to consider guys! I am the GM at a restaurant so I have an endless supply of used veggie oil available at my home base. I wanted to have a bulk tank for extended trips so i wouldn’t have to worry about finding a fuel source out on the road. I think this tank is abit much tho....
The best idea i have is to strap some wheels and a trailer hitch on the beast!!!!

I'd do 55 gallon barrels at home too.
1: you can't move a 400 gallon container unless its empty.
2: if you get a bad batchof oil, you can ruin the whole 400 gal. (then what do you do with it?)
3: come winter, you got a 400 gal. sludge-cicle. If you have (movable) drums, you can bring 1 inside to warm up.
I've debated getting a 275 gal tote-but stick with 55 gal drums for the reasons above.

I totally agree with sdwarf36. I've been running WVO for years now and based on my experiences multiple 55 gallon barrels is the way to go! You don't want a tank that big; its trouble waiting to happen. Still, it is worth a fair amount just in the value of the aluminum and the pump. Get it and sell it for scrap! Use the pump! Maybe it would be worth it to have someone cut it down and re-weld it into several smaller tanks? Aluminum is nice for WVO because it doesn't cause the oil to polymerize like steel does.

As someone who built a wood roof hatch, I love your metal one, but I DO NOT like the look of that lock hasp sticking into the hatchway from the inner wall. It looks like you could easily cut yourself open on a shin or thigh when coming or going. Or maybe catch a pant leg when climbing and cause a tumble. Be careful with that!

Good looking!! I have been trying to think of a way to avoid this and I’m probably going to incorporate some type of finale ladder rungs or a handle the spans that wall of the hatch and helps cove the latch while still being able to have it serve its functional purpose. There is a hatch clasp on the outside and I’ve thought about just cutting off the one on the inside, but don’t think I’m ready to lose the ability to lock it from the inside…..decisions…decisions…
