Re: First Post
Speaking of "Magic" --- the Tannic based converters are just that. They convert surface oxides present on any and all ferrous metals into a stable organic compound that simply cannot rust...think Alchemy. After testing for years, what I found to be one of its' greatest benefits is the way that action takes place. Unlike any kind of coating (paint, galvanizing, epoxy, whatever) it does not rely on a surface bond with the material it is supposed to protect the way that just about every other such medium does. It IS the surface of the metal, just altered down a few microns. That action eliminates the possibility of oxidation ever traveling along the boundary layer usually found between two different materials. If you've ever had a scratch through the paint on a piece of metal (fender, wheelbarrow, lawn furniture, etc,) you have probably seen rust form almost immediately in the exposed metal. That is to be expected. Bad news is that because the paint is simply laying on top of the metal surface, that same rust can (and will) creep outward via the boundary layer between the two different materials and spread outward from the scratch. Based on the tests & experiments I ran, Tannic based converters will not allow such migration simply because there is no such separation of materials. I cut and filed through the black finish on a variety of Tannic treated metal and the exposed steel did indeed rust very quickly. However...it did not spread outward at all. When I tossed these findings to an engineer friend, he played with it and concluded that the unique nature of the conversion process was the trick.
Application is pretty simple. Knock off any loose rust and scale, degrease, apply with a brush, roller or sprayer (non-toxic/very low odor) and let it work. Cures in about 15 - 30 minutes depending on weather. And since this particular brand contains a poly finish that rises to the top, no additional coating is required. Paint over it if you like, but it's not necessary.
Just wanted to pass my personal findings along since there are so many different products out there. Protecting rebar in cement is demanding but if done properly will extend the life of any ferrocement products by orders of magnitude. Rusting (and expanding) steel reinforcement in cement-based media is crumbling the last hundred years worth of infrastructure in this country. Sadly, no one knew back then just how bad it could become.
As a great man once said..."Rust never sleeps".
But if you do it right, you can put it in a coma!

thjakits --- roger the "no such thing as stainless (non-rust) steel".
My Ex-WIfe always took terms like "stainless", "unbreakable" & "non-stick" merely as a challenge.

Re: First Post
Well here are some before and after pictures of the phosphoric in action.
Here is what was left over from treating the floor.
Here is the exhaust pipe on my Sears Suburban.
10 seconds into treatment.
After
As you may see some rust still remains at the seam. This occurs when no scaling/sanding takes place
before treatment.
This is a piece of my trailer.
Before
After
This was about 2 hours into treatment. The Phosphoric Prep n Etch was still doing its job.
Notice part of the leveler was not treated. Some oxidation still remains.

Re: First Post
Has anyone here ever stayed at the Wal-Mart In Gunnison Colorado?
How about any of the R/V Parks?
I am looking for a place to stay on the western slope, but all the parks seem real classy.
According to the pictures all of the residents and campers seem to all have new units.
The few I called said no buses.
I am looking for a place in Montrose, or Gunnison.
Any recommendations?

Re: First Post
You might try the Ultimate Campground Project.
Here's Colorado
How long will you be staying? If it's two weeks or longer, a weekly or monthly rate in a private campground may be cheaper.
You may find that you will need to actually show up at a private campground in order to stay. If you are only staying a few nights, they should have no problem with a skoolie. It's when you start talking monthly that they get picky.

Soaked it with concentrated saltwater, poured Muriatic acid on it, cut through the protective surface and still could not generate any oxidation anywhere except where the raw metal was exposed. And it did not migrate beyond that point. Needless to say, I am treating just about everything on my bus with it. Runs almost $20 a quart but seems to go a long ways. It is a Tannic acid based converter that also produces a poly finish. All the other converters I've seen are only rated as a primer and require a topcoat to protect it, this one has it built in. Good stuff.

Re: First Post
Hey RK --- the "Restore" by Quest is the one I have tested, worked with over the years and still use on the rebar and other steel in my cement sculpting business. I am also treating just about all the metal on my bus with it as I go. Good stuff.

Is there a way to buy the quest stuff online? They didn't show me a way to buy it on their website. The BORA restore seems easyto get..

Re: First Post
Best bet is to contact the manufacturer direct and ask for the closest distributor. A lot of my sculpture students have found it that way.
