Question: how is the sheet steel covering the window openings fastened to the bus? Did you use automotive panel adhesive like SikaFlex, screws, rivets, welding.....? Just trying to figure out the best way to do it when the time comes.

Oh yeah, just curious how much you paid for the bus originally? I'm trying to get an idea on what I can expect to spend on a solid, mechanically sound bus. There's a bus dealer a few hours north of me but of course they'll mark the prices way up vs. a private seller. I think he gets most of his supply from the school systems and other organizations that turn their fleet over every few years.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Once again awesome job! How did you get the wife to agree to full time living in a skoolie? I've been working on that for several years with not a bit of luck Thanks.
John
Thanks John! We used rivets on the window sheeting. No panel adhesive but that might not be a bad idea at all.
If I recall correctly, we spent like $4500. Bought it from a private seller in Oregon. Fly and drive craigslist kinda thing.

Good luck with the wife.... I've got no advice there... I was one of the lucky guys that found a girl who loves to travel just as much as I. Full timing in a skoolie is just a means to an end.

Do that... I have parking here for at least another bus... Maybe will have some progress by then!
Actually, coming along slow but steady.

Re: Great White Buffalo - 92 BB All American RE

Quick update...
With the help of a good friend, we were able to get a metal swing out door built for the bus. I think it turned out great and the wife loves it. Way stoked!

The factory bus door was heavier than expected.

I should be able to removed most of this door operation mechanism stuff. The wife and I have already started talking about ideas for our new found shelf.

We used leftover window skinning sheet metal for the door.

I will post some more pictures once I get it finished up.

Door looks great! And it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as you're happy with it near the end (I say near since I know these projects rarely end! ) Thanks for the update, looks awesome

I've said it before and I'll say it again...I am really envious of buses with straight sides when it comes time to build a door! Great job Syke...looks very professional.

Curious...what's your plan for finishing off the inside? I cut some very lite sheet metal to fit mine but I'm thinking about attaching something like Formica over it. Outer skin is welded, inner skin will be screwed in place for access to adjustable hinge plates. Not being straight or square, adjusting mine will be...tricky.

Re: Great White Buffalo - 92 BB All American RE

Thanks guys!

bansil - I bought the lock boxes. $8 each. Can't beat that.

Tango - Right now the plan is to cover it with wood. I will trim and paint it like the other 4 windows. My only thought with wood or something other than metal was to try and get a thermal break effect going on. We shall see...

Now I need to figure out a way to secure the door in the open position. Any ideas?
I was thinking maybe a hook and loop setup off the mirror bracket or maybe a giant magnet?

Re: Great White Buffalo - 92 BB All American RE

Not sure if you noticed my 1st door mod, when parked I pull pin and door is "free"
The mirror is no where strong enuf if you have lots of different folk using the door as the "last hand hold/ brace" while exiting bus.
Nothing got bent,I just had to readjust mirror before we moved out on last day

The door minders work great and I would just attach it to mirror main frame....even with the above statment...hell id rather it move some than for folks to not have fun

Re: Great White Buffalo - 92 BB All American RE

Here are pics of the door stop/holder I built.

Detail door closed.

Door held open

Originally it didn't have the plate welded on top, but it wasn't quite strong enough, it bent where the plunger hole was. Now, with the
plate it is quite strong. It also looks better with the hook stored for travel.
