I just called them. They only have plastic, no idea of anyone making steel. This is a bummer. May have no choice but to seal the openings with a steel plate kinda like William Bailey did with his bus. I can't justify putting a ton of work into this girl and risk her roof leaking every so often.... I understand the safety issues, but this may be the deciding factor to permanently seal the roof and blank out the hatches..... Wife is bummed right now.....

I tell everyone with an ear to hear that the roof hatches are really chintzy and to do something else. mine are just some ceiling panels cut down to cover the holes for now. I'll actually fix them permanently soon. They were basically the only sources of leaks on mine. But man, did they ever LEAK.

CB,
I hear ya! I'm already formulating a permanent solution to fix this. Details soon....

Good! Come up with something good, I'll "steal" the idea...
I''ve been planning to use closed end mandrel rivets and panel adhesive.

Have you thought of spending a little time removing & cleaning around them and putting them back in before you seal off those emergency hatches or are they busted up and not worth dealing with.
I think it would be worth the little effort to at least try (and maybe Wifey wouldn't be as bummed) and would understand that sealing them absolutely needs to happen.

We looked at them today and these things were made 27 years ago in plastic. They were sitting in the 100*+ heat in the California sun for all that time. They were well beyond repair at this point. So there were two options, either replace them with new plastic ones or just delete them. Deleting is quicker, easier, cheaper, and provides a more permanent solution..... Just sayin'....

Mine were so chintzy that they were broken in every conceivable way.
The construction was so laughable that I never even considered them or anything like them for use on the bus. They would be terrible for thermal efficiency. I do plan to use a coach/rv skylight that is also an emergency exit. Maybe two of them, but likely just the one.

Been in quite a few heavy thunderstorms in my bus and the Transpec hatches I have are super solid and don't leak a drop, guess I got lucky. A skylight sure would be nice though!
M103 -
Heavy Fuel is looking great so far! Hope the roof leaks don't slow down progress too much.

'Bout the way I feel with these leaks! GRRRRRR
Well, my son will be here from my ex's apartment soon. Had to read up!
We're tackling the walls today.*YUCK* But we have a plan, tools, and safety gear all ready to go! The heat should be less intense today (or so the weather prognosticator guesstimates).
Have camera to document efforts.... Story at 5, film at 10.....

That's too bad that the heat will be less intense -- aren't you scraping tar today, or have I confused yours with another..? I found that the tar-scraping went almost 2x speed when I did it in the early afternoon in the sun on an over-100-F degree day. Wasn't fun, but fast(er) was worth something too.

Tar scraping was today alright! Got all the exposed fiberglass removed , but after lunch my one ton pick-up decided to crap the bed. Had only 36 hours on the clock since the last major project on her costing nearly $3K! So I sat on the side of TX 99 waiting for the tow truck most of the afternoon. Didn't get ANY pics today. Won't be able to until my one ton is out of the shop. However, my son and I got a bunch of work done on Heavy! The tar scraping with the heat was much easier as the day wore on. Got some Airplane stripper and cleaned one section down to the primer. It was VERY effective! I was extremely pleased! Pics will follow when I get back out there.
SOOO frustrated with my pick-up

Just sold my 98 GMC... After spending a ton of time and money on it.
Gets old.
Glad you got to try the stripper out, though...
