Re: How to lock them doors!

I'm not sure when our door lock was installed (factory or previous owner). I've never seen it on another bus yet but maybe someone else here may know of others. We have a '75 International Loadstar. There's a handle on the outside that locks. When it is turned it pulls a cable that releases the inside handle and opens the door. When it is engaged you cannot pry the doors open. You may be able to open them with extreme force but definately not easily.
This looks like it may be fairly easy to duplicate. The outside handle looks like any shed type handle that turns a bar then just attach a cable and run inside to a lever. Thought I'd share this idea, hope it helps.

This is what I did on my front door:

Ultimately, I will be concealing the cable behind the dash & duct panel.

Re: How to lock them doors!

Mine also has the outside lock with the cable. You just push the door shut until it 'locks' and when you want to get in, you unlock the handle and twist that which releases the door catch... I replaced the bus door, so I've got the handle and cable assy just sitting there. It looks like a short cable, would only work on a flat nose bus I'm guessing. I might be willing to part with it for shipping costs if I can figure out what I want to fill that hole with. Will have to think and tinker with this before making any final decision though...

Re: How to lock them doors!

Right now im trying to replace the rusty locks on my 86 Bluebird. The sidedoor handle (when closed) is held by a metal peg is pushed up by a strong magnet when you turn the key. Genius eh? Wish i'd thought of that. None of that cable and pulley nonsense (no offence). the tricky part? the original lock's totally screwed, so i have to run wiring up down and around the engine block to the new lock. Im learning more and more about the haphazard design of my bus....2 months on. At least its roomier to fix, than say a compact.

Re: How to lock them doors!

Cliff,

I'd be interested in aquiring your set-up. Give me a price or shoot me a private message with your email and I'll send you a shipping label.

I'll just have to figure a way to actually get the handle past the latch. I cant just push the door closed.

Re: How to lock them doors!

As long as we're at it...does anyone know where a guy could find a solenoid like a door popper? A lot of the ones I have seen are the pull type...I need the push type with maybe a 1 inch stroke and probably 35-40 lbs of force just to be safe. Ideas?

Re: How to lock them doors!

I'll take a closer look at the thing this weekend, maybe get a picture or two for ya. I need to see what is involved with the removal as well as how to fill or cover the hole left behind. If it's a big job I'm likely to just leave it, but if it's not too much trouble I don't mind donating it for the price of shipping...

Re: How to lock them doors!

I am guessing (maybe inncorectly) that using padlocks to lock your bus's doors is not such a hot idea.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. In fact, I have one on my back door. Though it looks good.

Alright then, how about...........................

Any better?

Re: How to lock them doors!

I was thinking that while driving the padlock(s) would bounce around and make noise, but does anyone see any draw backs with padlocks?
I chain my bike up with a chain that has a 5230 pound breaking point so cheezy does not bother me.
I prefer not to see it as cheezy, but ghetto.

Those linear actuators can be had in many diffrent strokes and force ratings..
I thought about going that route as well, but there is something about still having the manual means of opening the door available, you know what I mean? The linear actuator would certainly be trick, but if it ever failed I'd be boned. If the solenoid ever failed, not biggie...I would just be back to a manual door. If it can just push my handle out (the Wayne's cam-over instead of using some sort of positive lock) with the solenoid so that I can push it in (jackknife door) that really is simple enough for me.

For now I just lock my front door by slamming it shut either from the inside or the outside and lock the back door with one of these.

Re: How to lock them doors!

same lock I used BigBlue, definitely nicer than a padlock and only costs about $6.oo. For your solenoid setup, you could try a power lock solenoid, they push and pull. Or just make a simple lever setup to make the pull solenoid push.

Here's a picture of the lock setup on my bus, it's just a locking cover over the exterior door switch (electric door). simple, but effective.

Re: How to lock them doors!

On my bus, I'm cutting a hole in the metal under the windshield but behind the hood. Facing forward. I'm going to put a steel, lockable door over the hole. Then, I'm going to route a cable up to the door release lever using a few pulleys. I'll have a lawnmower type handle inside the hole. I'll pull it and it will release the door latch. It's nice and simple, inconspicuous, effective and it doesn't look trashy. My front door folds up inside the bus and I like to drive down the road with the door open. I didn't want to change it up any. I'll post pictures when I get it done. Also, for the rear emergency door, I'm going to have it locked from the inside. I would NEVER put a padlock on the outside or anything that would prevent me and my family from being able to escape. Make it to where it keeps bad guys out, but doesn't prevent you from GETTING out.

Re: How to lock them doors!

where are photos of the guy that used a linear actuator inline with his stock door opener...so you could open the door manually or use the remote??? that was a simple setup that was way cool.

another option i thought about for a lock is using one of those magnet switches commonly used for burglar alarms on windows.

you could mount it to a certain location on the bus, then if you're camping and have multiple people that require access to the bus you could give each of them an inexpensive "magic" bracelet, ring, neckless etc that has a magnet in it. putting this magic ring next to the magnet switch would open the door, just like magic.

Re: How to lock them doors!

When I need to lock my doors, I latch the front door from the inside and paddle lock the rear door. I bolted some angle iron to the back door and put a paddle lock though it when I need the bus locked. I can also take the same lock and put it on the inside of the back door to lock it form the inside.

Very cheap and easy to do, cost me less than $10 and only takes a few minutes to make...

Here's a video of my lock setup.
