Yeah, I figured as long as I was digging the ditch anyway, I may as well run a line for the cable too.

Re: Locutus' Skoolie Conversion: 1990 Crown Super Coach II

I got the bus back from the truck repair shop today. Suspension work. Two airbags, two leveling controls, freight, labor and tax came to just shy of $1000.

So with the purchase cost, tranny tuneup and this latest expense, I'm into the bus for about $3500. But it shouldn't need any more mechanical work for quite a while. I might add an additional tranny cooler at some point in the future, probably not until after the conversion is finished.

The shop owner previously worked for NC Machinery (the Caterpiller dealer) for something like 17 years. He's very familiar with 3208s and has overhauled hundreds of them. He discovered that it's a remanufactured 3208, but he says that's probably a good thing because 1: it probably has fewer miles on it than the 110K that's on the bus, and 2: for the few years surrounding and including 1990, the 3208s had bad smoking problems (white smoke). The later remans had corrected this problem. And in fact my 3208 doesn't smoke in the slightest.

On another note, I'm really starting to lean toward stripping my RV as a donor for the conversion. I think this will be the easiest and most cost effective solution. Nearly everything I need for my conversion is already in my RV. And for it's age, the interior is pretty nice and everything works. I may upgrade a few things (larger tanks, batteries, etc.), but shouldn't need much else.

Locutus, is your 3208 turbo'd or NA? I had heard that the on NA (naturally aspirated) engines the top part of the bore wore because of the high pressure of the compression piston ring (these being two ring pistons). The original bore wasn't tough enough to handle this, and that new harder liners were installed to handle this (& yes, I know it's a parent bore engine).

My question that the above refers to is that: does a REMAN Cat 3208NA have these new liners installed as a routine part of the rebuild? I would think that would address the white smoke problem.

Nothing done lately on the Crown bus project, other than trying to get the air leveling system leak-free. My mechanic has been working on it but it still leaks slowly on the starboard side. Takes two days to deflate now instead of two hours. That's an improvement, but still not satisfactory. I'll try to get him out here again this week to see if we can finally nail down a solution.

Meanwhile, I've been trying to finish up another project: A home-built velomobile fairing to fit on my electric-assist trike. For full details on this project go here:

Here are a few teaser pictures:

They were also damn fast, and they set many distance and endurance records. I almost bought one some years ago when I was working in the bike biz here in SoCal - I would still love to have a low fast tadpole some day, but I may end up making my own version of a Windcheetah (but without the single-sided rear hub).

John, just back home after working on the tank frames under The Mistress

Hi, John.
I built the trike myself. It's based on the Street Fox plans that can be purchased online at http://www.atomiczombie.com. I made several modifications to the basic design, including front disc brakes and underseat steering. I then added an electric hub motor and NiCd batteries. The fairing is conected to the frame by a single hitch pin, which doubles as a hinge, and which makes it a snap to remove for fair weather riding. I constructed the fairing as a stand alone, so that all controls, lights, mirrors, etc. stay on the trike when the fairing is removed. And yes, that's yellow 4mm Coroplast.

How is the tank mounting coming along?

John,
Sounds pretty complex. Be sure to take lots of photos of your process and post them on your conversion thread.

I finally got around to taking out the seats, so here are the obligatory photos. I'm temporarily keeping two seats for a temporary dinette. I'm going to slap together the requirements for retitling as an RV, then I'll take it all out after I pass inspection and do the real conversion.

John,
I'm actually planning to remove the side windows and skin over with sheet metal, then cut openings for RV windows. But I was looking closely at the stock windows yesterday and couldn't figure out how they're installed. Do you know how to remove this type of window?
