Re: Ludicrous Speed

(dennis) bus came from taylor buses. The old man that owns the place gave us a really good discount over the phone, in fact he picked it out for us. It was the best bluebird in the lot, other than the newer ones.

Looked at a Thomas re, 5.9. It had a better ceiling height. But price was a grand more.
'
This one is has about 6'2" in head room, which is enough for Dan. Not so much for me, I'm 6'8".

Couple of trade offs compared to the AA. Shorter, and little lower, smaller engine, and more miles.
But newer, nice shape. And 5.9 is a good engine. May set the gov up a couple hundred at some point.

Towbar is a standard military medium towbar. I use it on my military trucks. Little overkill, it's rated 83,000lbs. Built some adapters for the Burb's framerails. Pintle on the bus has a plate behind the bumper to reinforce it.

It needs a tie rod end, and wipers are loose. One arm falls apart.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Allison makes great trannies, but the MT545 is a notorious gas sucker. I have a perfectly good one that came with my Cummins but I'm hunting for a non-computer 5 or 6 speed OD manual at this time. The gas mileage is about 25% better on any given engine than the 545. Anybody in the market for a good used Allison?

PS...Great lookin' dash BTW!

Re: Ludicrous Speed

(dennis) Sounds like he's going to live with the 545 for now. Dream is to put a 5-speed od manual in it, I have access to the spicer 3053's that were in military trucks. Only problem I see is setting up a remote shifter. Could probably sell the 545 and cover the install price of the spicer.

Trying to convince him to put a garage in the rear, but with 5 kids he needs all the living space he can get.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Yesterday we started pulling seats. Starting from the back we got about the first quarter of them out. They are through bolted at both legs and the chair rail. I used a air ratchet underneath until I got to the gas tank. Barb held the bolts up top with a ratchet.

For the seats directly over the gas tank, I removed the sender cover plate and was able to hold the nuts with a wrench while she used the ratchet to pull the bolts.

My son Sam pulled all of the seat cushions so we could access the chair rail bolts.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

We also got our first bummer news. Looks like the battery is shot. Had no charge, and when I opened the battery door to attempt to charge it, the battery is swollen and looks to have boiled. Need to check the voltage at running to see if it is over voltage or something.

good thing it happened now and not on the trip! first off get a new battery then check the system. when not in use pull a post off for obvious reasons lol. also i guess look up to see if your voltage controls are in the alt or separate.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Got some options for ya.
Lock up 545, 2300 rpm 57mph
Lock up 545, 2800 rpm 69mph
Can also use the gasser manual 3052, 1:1 5th, same speed as above. And I have one, it shifts very nice.
3053a, 2300 rpm 72mph
3053a 2800 rpm 88mph.... that might be a little fast....

Here is a link to the gear calculator, very handy for figuring gear ratios.
http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearratio.php

Easiest thing to do would be swap a lock up tranny in, and bump the rpms some. But tranny would cost ya. We may be able to get a good deal on one.
Otherwise, sell the one you have, and stick in a manual. Lot more work this way, but selling the auto should cover the cost of swapping. I have to look up the threads on parts needed to install spicer tranny behind the cummins.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Thanks for the research Stretch... I'm liking the idea of setting it up as a manual, so we may wind up going that way. I think that may be a while off though. Need to figure out my priorities LOL.

Got the last of the seats pulled today. Was thwarted by the last bolt in the last crash pad, but otherwise a very successful bus stripping night. Will post pics when I have light enough to take them.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Ok.... required "seats out" pictures below! Bolts holding seats in generally came out pretty easy with ratchet (with someone holding wrench on the other side), only snapped 5 or 6 off.

Also stripped the lettering from one side, it came off really easy with a heat gun and plastic scraper.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Update on the overcharge situation...
Replaced battery with 2 truck batteries wired parallel and was able to start her up. Checked the voltage with a meter. At idle it was 16.8

Alternator is a Leece Neville with a 102200 regulator. From google searches it looks like, while it is sort of adjustable (13.8 - 14.4), it is going need a replacement regulator.

If anyone has any experience with this alternator and has a better guess as to the reason for my over-voltage situation, I would appreciate advice.
