Demo-ing a stick & staple gives one a new appreciation for how well built the average Skoolie is, doesn't it?

Re: Ludicrous Speed

It sure does... with a stick and staple, particularly with a little water damage, its amazing that it holds together even going down the road.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

reminds me of when i tore a camper apart. heck so much is connected to this and connected to that that there isnt a whole heck of allot you can salvage sometimes!!

sold trailer frame to sis' bf and he flipped the axles and made a quad trailer out of it. if you put a deck on it you pretty much triple the value of resale lol

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Today we embarked on the scariest part of the conversion to date. Drum roll please...

We made a big hole in the side of the bus!

My friend, Dennis, drilled out the screws holding the hinges in place after attempts to remove them the normal way failed.

The emergency door came out without much further trouble.

Pulling down the wiring chase above the emergency door.

More to come...

Re: Ludicrous Speed

I cut the rub rails back using a die grinder with a cutoff wheel.

I used the air chisel to pop the mostly cut piece of rub rail off.

It was time to start cutting the rough opening out. First I tried cutting using a sawzall... I was making progress at the rate of about an inch every 15 minutes. I needed to find a better way.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Due to mother nature being unkind, we backed the bus into the pole barn. The way I found worked best for cutting out the rough opening was to put a cutoff wheel on a electric angle grinder. Thanks to Dennis for building an adapter to make use of the cutoff wheels.

Half of the door frame is loose!

Door frame, removed.

Got the hole for the stairwell cut out and that was it for the night.

Thanks to my goofy photographer, Joe, for this recent series.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

that is sorta what i did when i put the rv door about 3 feet ahead of the rear wheels.. left the emergency door on the other side. mine - i put the door where i could use part of the back compartment for the bottom step. also put a rv door where the original steps were for the generator.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

Lookin' Good Guys! --- I have to admit I have recently become really jealous of anyone with a "square" bus...i.e.;...one with nice, straight walls. My shorty has a very slight inward curve (so slight I didn't even notice until I started de-constructing things) that makes everything many times more difficult to deal with. I just started over on my front door. Not only do I have to accommodate the curve, but the front edge is straight...only the back edge has the arch. And it isn't a nice, neat rectangle...nooooo...it has a slope part way up that follows the windshield. I tossed my first try at a workable frame and have just begun another attempt. Arrrggghhh! I need someone with old fashioned boat building skills to help out on this one.

Re: Ludicrous Speed

@ Tango
We have been extremely lucky on this door installation so far. The frame pieces are the perfect width for our chosen door, and we only had to remove one of the overhead braces to get it to fit. Everything just seemed to line up. *Knocking on wood furiously*

Re: Ludicrous Speed

We have been working on possible color schemes, and have narrowed it down (probably) to one of these three. Opinions?

Top one reminds me of the paint on our bus when we got it (same colours). I don't care for the bottom one at all. Too much white.

All of them look great, but I'd hate to have to keep the last one clean!

The green is cool. Would look great in a campground. Where are you getting your paint, and what kind have you settled on using?

Re: Ludicrous Speed

We were kind of blah about the last one as well.

We will probably use rustoleum for the paint.

At first glance, the top one appeals to me the most. Ironic since I'm going with a white & green theme myself.
