Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
We recently picked up a 1977 Chevy bus that had been previously converted to a NASCAR bus. Had some bunks, shower, couch, dinette, and deck on top
Initial plans were to keep most of the interior but upon getting into it most of it was built poorly and had extensive water damage, from the water soaked carpet
So ripped out most of the interior and all of the carpet, then removed the rubber floor Good thing we did as it is all full of rust in a few spots, rear wheel well, and the first 2 ft at the front of the bus. Also removed the heaters..
So I am sure we will have some questions as this goes. Plan is to leave one set of bunks and add 2 benches and a dinette back in. 2 tv's inside with one that can go outside also. Small kitchen with no stove, and a kick ass stereo.
I'll get some pictures up tonight, but this should be fun. Need to have it all done and painted by labor day weekend

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
has anyone else ever bought an older rv to scanevge parts from?
looking at a 1982 allegro that currently doesn't run to get dual ac's from, generator, awning, some cabinets, fridge, holding tanks, toilet, water pumps, electrical panels, etc
what do i do with it when i am done? will a scrap yard take it?

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
I scrapped 5 rv's while working on my current bus. There is a lot of good parts, and many small unique to rv parts that are handy in a bus conversion. When one taketh a s/s rv to a scrap yard around here, one must remove all the wood. Easy way to do that is to rip it apart with a backhoe, etc and then just drag the wood framework and paneling stuff over on the side and build a fire...
It may take more than one rv to get the stuff you want.

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
We stripped my parents' old RV and salvaged quite a bit. Not sure how much of it we will use, but we did get a ton of stuff. We burned the wood and still have the frame with intention of making a flat bed utility trailer eventually. We also recycled the aluminum skin for a nice little profit too.

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
got sidetracked on a few other things, but got back on the bus.
The previous owners painted it with latex on the inside, i believe. but in a lot of places it is pealing and cracking, so i don't want to just paint over it. Strippers actually just make it worse because the paint does not come off. sanding works but is extremely slow and nasty.
anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
Tried sand blasting the inside today, and all it really does is make a mess. Anyone ever made a headliner for there bus? Thinking either thin Luna plywood and cover in cloth glued up, or maybe just carpet?
Want something that will hold up over time
Any thoughts?
Once I can get this part done we can actually make some progress on the bus

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
Also picked up an 89 Winnebago with. Itching wrong with it. I am going to gut it partially to get the 2 ac units, generator, stove, fridge, tanks, toilet, awning, and house electrical panel.
Friends all think I am nuts because this winnebago is n excellent shape, but it was only 1750, and can't find all my other items for anywhere close to that. Just need to figure out what to do with it once I am done

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
In the process of getting stuff out of the rv for use in the school bus. Trying to remove the water heater and trying to figure out what everything is, and where these hoses go
So the metal box has some low voltage cables from the water heater going not it and the water lines loop through it. It appears the water comes from the underneath to the heater to the metal box then back under the floor. There are also two smaller rubber hoses coming out the top side of the water eater and headed toward the sink / shower

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
So we are coming up on our third football season and the bus is doing great, except for one thing. It's too damn hot
So when we converted we left all of the windows, but I did put a blackout uv tint on them, also when in storage and during the games I put a Sun shade on the front windows. We also have 2 rooftop ac units. No matter what we cannot get the thing cool let alone cold during the first games of August/September. Plus we are looking at picking up baseball games next year and will really have some problems
Outside of removing the wall skins to insulate and remove windows what are my options. We have to figure something out

Re: Mean Green Tailgat'n Machine
we will be experimenting with sun screen fabric, 6ft x 40 ft rolls about $50
we plan to suspend off roof about 6inches using emt tubing, this will keep roof "cool" to the touch..or should
plan its to get 8 or 10 ft wide, lowes only had 6 ft at time
This is my theory and your mileage may vary, dump trucks and sawdust trailers use it to cover loads
