Might buy 1992 12-row Thomas Saf-T-Liner HD...

The price is great for what it is, already converted and registered RV about 200 miles from home. The conversion is a so-so job, but still a lot of time effort and money saved for me. I've got some jitters since it's my first skoolie. It's got a Cummins 5.9, unknown Allison trani (hopefully find out tomorrow), 220,000 miles, has underbelly storage so I'm betting it's already geared for highway.

The main application is a touring vehicle for bands, so I'll be filling the bedroom with 5 bunks (one over engine width-wise). I'm betting I'll have to upgrade to an 8.3 for optimal reliability in the mountains etc but for now the 5.9 will suffice. I figure it will either be worth upgrading or I'm confident I can get my money back on resale during peak season.

No matter how much I scour this forum I never feel like I've got a full grasp of what to look for. There's rust, engine leaks, tire date codes, rust, power, handling, rust, fluid quality, brakes, and oh yeah, rust. Is there a comprehensive checklist specific for novice skoolies out there? I'm not going to purchase without a more professional inspection, just want better confidence checking it out myself. Any reports on this model would be appreciated too. Thanks!

id check for rust, that 5.9 will be great. for the price of an engine swap its cheaper to just buy the bus with the motor you want

Interesting bus, turns out it's an MVP model, but with two headlights per side, thought all MVP's had only one. Trani is AT545, good news there. However the ceiling is only maybe 5'10" at center, I'm 6'2".

But here's the interesting part. It's in eastern Canada, where RE transit buses are SCARCE. This is the first I've heard of since I started looking 9 months ago. Bad news is that it's a Canadian bus, not an import, so it's got significant rust, even a bondo job that's cracked. So it's definitely not a long-term investment bus, but could still save huge dough compared to renting a gas RV at $1200/week, even if we only get another 50-60k miles out of it. But we can't afford a breakdown, period.

The conversion is also pretty campy. Laminate slapped down over the original floor, insulation was not redone, instead there's interlocking rubber mats on the walls. Barfy by Skoolie standards I'm sure. And I'm guessing tires from late 2005 are a bad idea, heh.

Also having a terrible time with insurance as an Ontario resident. It's true Cooperators will insure skoolies, but *not to new customers*, even if they're already insuring the current owner! I sweet-talked my way into a phone date with an RV specialist promising to switch my auto and home insurance too, but even that's no guarantee. There's always the government catch-all insurance that's crazy high, $2-3k/year, but apparently it's terrible service, no property coverage, minimum liability only. If I can't insure any conversion RV for a reasonable rate, man I'll have wasted a lot of time!!
