My "Summer of Love" Bus

Hi, Skoolies.

My name is Allen. I've been reading some here, and decided to go ahead and join up. I was recently given a bus by a friend. The fact he gave it to me tells you it isn't in the best of shape, but it was free, and I intend to make something out of it. I don't have any pictures yet, but I'll take some eventually, and post them here. I'm not doing anything with the bus for the time being, anyway.

My new bus is a 1967 International Harvester Loadstar. I don't have the paperwork yet, so that is all the information I have right now. I can't find a number of any kind anywhere on the bus. I'll post what I find out once I get what paperwork the old owner has. The bus hasn't been driven in a number of years, so I'm planning to just go through the whole thing, bottom to top, and do whatever needs to be done.

While it is just sitting, I'm thinking the first thing I'll probably do is pull the wheels off and replace the tires, and work on the brakes while I have the wheels off. I have a ton of questions I'm hoping some of you can help me with. Is there a typical brake configuration that these buses had? I don't think it had air brakes. Also, the rear wheels are two rims, and the outer rim appears to bolt to the inner rim. Is it any problem to get new tires put on these rims? I don't think this is the "widow makers" I've heard about. '

As you can see, I don't know much at all about buses, but I'm 55 years old, and spent nearly 20 years working as an industrial millwright, and I've worked as a carpenter the rest of the time. This is all stuff I can do. I'm really looking for information right now. This sure seems to be the place to come for that. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the reply, Smitty, and for the welcome. I'm sure you're right about the hydraulic brakes. I'll try to post some pictures soon.
