heater core cleaning:

I dry- brush (w med-soft bristle) those first to get fuzz off.

Rinse,

spray some degreaser- some like simple green by gallon.

wait.

blast w garden hose.

then realize you made a mess in your driveway and shoulda done it elsewhere.

rebuild squirrel cage blowers w/ clean/grease or replace to quiet those squirrels.

Shop vac with brush.
The big box stores sell a coil cleaner for hvac that will shine it up.
After the shop vac.

Hi fellow bus nerds! Little monday update for ya!

Both heaters are spic and span! Thanks for the tips everyone. I pressure washed the non-delicate components and, brushed, soaked, blasted, and scrubbed the coils with a variety of brushes and the garden house.

I think they will stay uninstalled for a while so I can remove the driver seat and plywood floor and also delete some of the unnecessary bus flasher wiring.

Anyway here are some photos.

Oh and also, I have been thinking about windows for after the roof raise.

I'm try to salvage some rv-style windows that open, unlike the transit bus or handicap shuttle bus windows. The latter only seem to pop open or slide a small portion of the top....

Are these type of windows normally double paned? We would prefer double paned for better insulation value, but was that even a thing that came factory on buses? Or am I going to have to find really nice actual rV windows for them to be dou me paned?

I would replace all the heater motors since youve got that thing apart.. those heaters look liek the ones I had in my old bluebird.. identical.. if you want to get real fancy you can mod the heck out of them andadd A/C to those.. I did it.. lot of work but made it nice for on the road driving... my current bluebrd has the junk kysor stuff.. i miss my Hurri-Hots..

Ohhh how did u manage to add engine drive a/c?! Our bus did not come equipped with a/c unfortunately. We plan on doing a mini-split for home HVAC but, engine driven heat and a/c would be nice for the driver and to defrost/defog.

I'm defiantly going to add some sort of filter to the air intakes to prevent most of the dust and debris from getting in there.

Update

Well we have had the bus 3 years now. Click on the gallery for the few quick photos i just took. The covid-19 quarantine has allowed us time to get some of the framing and windows installed. Hoping to get more windows and bondo done as the weather warms. Its up and down around 45F and just a little too cold for the chemicals.

Teaser.....

on the negative side. We rang in the new year with a robbery. Our welder, air compressor, and topbox full of Craftsman ratchets was robbed out of our garage. The two kids had a string of over 20 robberies in the neighborhood. Pretty sure the cops got him. We saw a news article a month ago that cited our area.

Burglary and/ or theft but not a Robbery...
It still sucks though..
most likely the perp(s) live fairly close....probably right in the middle of where all the burglaries occurred.
Slim chance of getting any of your stuff back, even slimmer chance of restitution...but it does happen.
I hope you are lucky enough to get something...

Well technically it was from a mercury villager but I think they are the same car haha.

Have you had any luck tracking down a wiring schematic for the rear glass? I want to keep the defroster and electronic opener. I just want to check if there were any relays and what amperage those circuits were.

I'm having a hard time turning up any solid info.

End of summer update

Things have changed a bit. This is no longer a "team" project. I have taken ownership of this project.

Here's a gallery link and a quick pic before you hit the word wall.

https://imgur.com/gallery/q1Ymwrr

Now on to bus specifics. Tentatively the plan is to move Penny out of Rochester and out to my parents' property in PA. The goal is to have her in PA before Halloween (I am still going to live in Rochester but, I will be making regular trips back home for nearly every weekend until this project is in a "useable" condition.

In the last few weeks I have been able to button up a bunch of things to get Penny road worthy again. Insurance, taillight replacement/upgrades, driver's seat install, door closures. Left to do involves packing all of the parts and tools into the bus, re-install side mirrors, registration, and some "light modifications" to the property she is stored at...

I managed to pick up a used ductless mini split for free the other day, so that's neat. Also got about 150 gallon of holding tanks with dump valves for $50

I might get into live streaming on weekends and likely for the travel day. Follow along if you're into that. Oct 18-19??? Facebook: 5speedhouse - Penny the Bus ----- Instagram: 5speedhouse

There's more pics on my imgur page if you look. Also, ask and ill take more pictures of things.

If you made it this far, sorry for the word wall, and thanks for following.

I like your replacement rear lights, by the way. That's pretty novel.

Round the Scranton/carbondale area.

Yeah I like them well enough. The decision was a long one to purchase these particular style. They do an interesting infinity/mirror effect in the dark.

Well the journey out of Rochester was successful... Had to slightly modify the old rental property to get it down the driveway.

With no floor or transmission cover the bus is freaking loud. See my imgur galleries. Otherwise drove fine. The steering box is loose...which I have know... So it's a little boaty to drive... I think the steering box is adjustable so you can take the sloop and wear out.

Anyways. Happy almost Halloween!

Skoolie dashboard rehab https://imgur.com/gallery/RCzD5qa

Spent the last few weekends really making some good headway.

The skylight transition area is sooooooo close to not leaking anymore. Just a few frustrating drips.... But major work on the dashboard and driver's area.

My dad and I have the oem heaters cleaned, tested, painted/primed and re installed. Just need to add coolant and test them.

I also installed KILMAT on the firewall and behind the heaters.

We also managed to get the first sheet of insulation and subfloor down! I used 1in polyiso and 1/4in lauan type board. Glued down with liquid nails.

Now I posted on a Facebook page and someone noted that polyiso is less affective in colder climates..... Shoot! This is supposed to be a ski bus! Seems I might switch to xps for the rest of the floor.... Any thoughts?

Anyway, I'm hopeful I can get all the floor insulation down this weekend over Thanksgiving.... We shall see...

Happy Thanksgiving skoolie folks!

Lots of progress since last thanksgiving. I have a back log of updating to do on this thread. I have been more active on IG/FB so feel free to take a look over there. @5speedhouse on both platforms.

For now here is a video I made back in July. Ill try to upload some more pics and such to imgur and get them up on the board the next few days.

Anyways, enjoy the video.
